1963 pool resurection

Waldog, I have replied:)

That little pool with overflowing dirt makes me laugh. You are going to need a truckload of those to hold all of that dirt. Perhaps, you can become friendly with a neighbor and put it in their yard:D

Yes, problem is people only take what they want and leave a big mess behind. A lot of people on Craig's list just want to get your address too and never show up. ( at least when you're home)
There is a place we can dump it at no charge but it is a bit of drive. Gas and time equal money.
Just hoping there are no big surprises inside once we get the dirt out. Once it's gone, it's gone. I may be on craigslist looking for free dirt!

Subscribing! I would totally go after this project. I am so glad I just joined and am finding this thread now. I could never handled waiting a whole year waiting to find out if you could get through the red tape.

Definitely advertise your "loam". It costs a ton of money. A contractor may want it, etc. Tell them they have to talk it all, sod etc.

Good luck! I hope you can keep the vintage tiles. They are especially excellent.:D

I have no information to how deep it is. You see a hole midpoint near the block wall I hit bottom at about 5'. I'm guessing the deep end to be in the 8-9' range.
This pool will be entirely dug out by hand.

wow. thats gonna be brutal man. Might I at least suggest a small track hoe rental? compact, very controllable, 12 inch bucket, minimal damage to surrounding yard. if your sure its at least 5 ft deep, you can dig down 5' then do the rest by hand. last time i rented one,(a few years back) they were about $250 for a weekend. one of those "pick up on friday afternoon, have it back monday morning" deals. fun to operate too, and a heck of a lot better than shoveling by hand. if you need any trenching done for any electrical or plumbing for the pool, they do a fine job at that too.

yes, im getting lazy in my old age....

I am just going to throw a couple comments out there about equipment.
- Generally the VF is not worth it and can cause issues. Stick with the cheaper VS version.
- Raypac heaters get much better reviews here than anything else. Although you may have warranty reason to stick with at least 3 pieces of Pentair equipment.
- For cartridge filters, go as big as you can afford. Given a volume we can provide some recommended minimum sizes.

Keep the pics coming! This is going to be one heck of a renovation!

I guess I'm not the only crazy person in SoCal digging out a 1960's pool. I bought a house in November that has an old Blue Haven pool in the back yard. It was covered up with astruturf and looked like a putting green. I just got done digging it out this weekend and I'll be getting quotes for coping, tile, plaster, and deck work next week. It looks like my pool was not filled in "by permit" though because there are no holes and it looks in good shape other than some damage to the steps and coping. As far as I'm concerned by pool was just REALLY DIRTY and just needed to be cleaned and some remodeling done.

Here are some pics:

It was hard for the guys to keep from gouging the plaster because of the angles but there was nothing that a new plaster job wouldn't take care of. The steps were damaged a bit but I'm guessing that was done when it was filled in. I want to redesign the steps a bit so it's not that big of a deal. I have to travel for a couple weeks so other than my wife getting some quotes for me this project will be on hold until I get back.

Now that I found this site and this thread I'll be watching closely to see how it goes. I don't want to hijack anybody's thread so if i have questions I'll post them in a new thread.

Mike
