are they any places out there where you can purchase salt t cell at a better price? $500 is pretty steep! are the generic brands worth it?

Welcome to TFP!!!Hard to say ... the generics may be cheaper, but they may not last as long (even if they claim to have a warranty).
Up to you to decide to take the risk to save money up front and not get the Hayward cell.
What size if your pool? What size cell are you looking at?
I found this to be a good reliable cell. I think it has been over 2 years since I installed it. The owner/support were very responsive
