16 July 2024 Finishing Up my OB Pool

I've had this question a couple of times and just didn't worry too much about it. But I do get the point and I could easily do that. That would mean it will have to do spa duty as well. With 10 jets in the spa should need 100 gpm. I might be a little light on flow rate but I could close a few when we're not using them. Just looking at the filter gauge at 3000 rpm I think it was 10 psi, so say 22 ft head plus say 15 ft of elevation plus dynamic piping loss.
Why is there 15ft static head? Doesn't the suction and return go back to the same place and net to zero?

Or is this because you are using the filter gauge which is 15' above the spa? But that doesn't make sense either because of priming.

The problem with a manual bypass is that you have to open and close it manually based on the flow.

Trying to set it correctly is very difficult and you can forget.

A check valve bypass works automatically.

In any case, you should have a real flow switch on the heater to protect it from firing with no flow.

You can't heat the water for the spa by pulling water from the trough.

You have to pull from the spa and return to the spa.

You can put a separate spa jet pump on the spa jets if you want good action.

You can use the 5 hp pump as a spa jet pump if you can close the suction to the trough and open a line to the spa main drain and have a spa return line.

You won't be able to use the Infinity Edge and the spa jets at the same time.

Yep, that was the plan. 3-way valve on suction and discharge that changes suction from infinity basin to spa and pool returns to spa jets. I had planned that I'd use automation to slow the 5 hp pump down to the correct speed for the flow needed for the jets and the heater. Don't see much need to have the infinity wall running when we're in the spa. I really like the heater automatic by-pass idea. Thanks!

No, I was guestimating high... will probably be OK.

Lots of good stuff here, thanks much. It appears I'll have plenty of flow using the smaller 1.5 hp pump in spa service so I'd just put a 3-way valve on the suction and discharge to switch between pool drain and spa drain plus pool returns to spa jets. Another advantage of this line up is the suction piping on the 5 HP pump is getting pretty crowded with the 3" 3-way valve and the 3" check valve. Only thing I'd like to leave in the infinity wall circuit is the swg. I'll be running the 5 HP pump 24/7 and only filtering a few hours per day normally. But that also brings up the flow through my RJ-60 salt cell. Maybe I should set up a similar automatic bypass?

Isn't the pool water level about at about the same height as the pump pad?

Is this drawing still accurate?


I used that for the IE plumbing and put together a rough head loss model for plumbing with the heater in-line and one for the heater bypassed and one without the heater at all.


The results are plotted below. Bypassing the heater helps but not as much as eliminating the heater all together. How long is the edge? What is the tolerance on the edge height?

You should have used 2 channel drains and you should have regular floor or wall returns in addition to the jets.

That way, you could do filtration and heating on one pump and jets on the other pump.

In my opinion, jets are overrated.

In my opinion, jets don't really do as much as people think they will do.

If you have a 32 foot long weir wall, then the amount of flow depends on the height you want to get over the weir.

If we want 3/8" of lift, that comes to 264 GPM.

With all 4" pipe and nothing else, you should be able to hit about 275 GPM at 3,450 RPM.
