Drilling holes in stairs

Does anyone have pictures when they drilled add'l
holes in their wedding cake stairs? What size drill bit? Can there be too many holes? Just curious, for I too want to drill more holes for circulation..

Red are original holes. Yellow new holes I drilled. Plan to add more this year.

{edit} Holes are 1 1/2" spade/paddle bits. Don't want a chance of anyone little getting hand caught in holes.
