I'm having the same issue. The DE is not coating the grids, only in spots. I'm wondering if I have a problem with grease or oil?

Welcome to TFP... A Great resource for all your pool and filter questions...
I doubt you have a grid issue... When you backwash or open your filter, the DE will often fall off at some places but not so much other places.
How you add DE is important also...
Fill a five gallon bucket with the amount of DE needed.. (Use two buckets if needed). Then add water from a hose. You will be amazed at how much water will still fit in the bucket.
Stir into a very thin mixture. Turn on the pump (at least 2500 RPM) and slowly pour into the closest skimmer to the pad.
