Pool Plaster Problems - Videos this time.

Hello all, we just installed an onground pool. Fill day was last
Saturday. The builder filled the pool on Saturday, but had the wrong filter installed.
So, the pool sat for seven full days with brand new plaster and no circulation. During this time there was a fair amount of plaster dust in the pool. Is this standard practice? Is it okay not to have circulation? The plaster is dark grey and is showing large black streaks. It has only been circulating since late Saturday afternoon and it seems to be getting worse. The builder states it will be a "marbled" color, but black streaks don't appear to be marbled to me. My last pool also had grey plaster and there
were imperfections in the color. Some spots lighter and some darker. Does any of this sound normal
or fixable? I am attempting to prepare for the worst and wonder if I should call one or many plaster specialists out to take a look. Suggestions?

Signed,

Hope I am not over reacting "new pool owner"

Thanks for any insight or advice.

Re: Brand new pool - plaster worries - Help

I am sorry to hear your plaster is not coming out like you wanted it to.

Dark plaster is very prone to mottling. Without seeing any pics I can only guess this is what happened. If you look at your contract you might even see something about it in there.

Time and brushing may or may not even it out.

IMG_4828.jpgHere is a photo from this morning. I would be fine with some
color variation, but these seem to be streaks and mostly around the bowl. I'll get some
better photos this afternoon. Is it possible this is
part of the normal curing process?

Still trying to find my way around TFP. Looking for help/advice/insight.
Plaster was complete on our pool on Saturday and something is wrong.
at first I thought it was only discoloration but after watching the videos
I shot today it is clear that the dark streaks are actually a different texture.

Does anyone know what may have caused this? What is it called?
Can it be fixed or do we need to replaster? What does a replaster cost in South Central Texas? Any recommendations on who to call in the San Antonio area?

Thanks in advance!:(

That finish is beyond poor, I have never seen anything that bad.
What does your pool builder have to say? Is that finish acceptable to him?
Fixing that, no matter how it us done, is the beginning if never ending problems.
Ideally, you want a monolithic (all at one time) placement so it bonds together through the full thickness.
If you put 2 layers of a cementitous product over each other, it is extremely important to use the correct products, stored correctly, mixed exactly over manufacturers instructions and used as directed and even when everything is followed precisely, it is hard to prevent shrinkage cracks in the repair product and cracking because the products are different, different thicknesses, and will expand and contact at different rates.

First - ask PB about it.
Do they think it is acceptable?
How are they going to repair it.

please post

Re: Brand new pool - plaster worries - Help

Who has been in charge of balancing the water? Who has been checking and keeping the water balanced after it was started?

How did the PB "start" the plaster? Did he do an acid wash right after the plaster was put on?

Was the pool brushed daily after it was filled?

Another question:

What does it feel like? Can you feel where the different colors are?

It feels rough. Larger grit than sandpaper. Also he filled the pool and it sat for a week without equipment hooked up. I am sending him an email today as I feel I need to be very clear in writing. So thankful I found this group, I think I am going to need lots of advice to get through this.

Who is the plaster manufacturer? Most have warranty registration info on their websites, be sure to register your plaster warranty. If you don't receive a response from the PB quickly then I would contact the plaster manufacturer, most will get involved right away to help with a resoluton.

Does this mean there is no hope? I am requesting that the pool be re-plastered not repaired. Is re-plastering a viable option?
