Pump installed in 2011. Today I noticed a slight clicking sound coming from the back of the pump motor. If I didn’t know any better it sounds like electric arcing Pump sound.

I’m not sure if this is a sign that the motor is nearing end of life and will fail at some point - but in any case, would love to know if anybody has heard this kind of noise before.

My next question is, does it make any sense to replace just the motor if it’s failing and leave the pump housing in place?

Thanks in advance

Michael,

I can't tell much from the video, but about the only thing you can try is to remove the back cover and make sure the fan blade is not hitting anything or that nothing has gotten in there.

Just curious.. Do you run your pump 24/7 or does it turn off and restart every day??

I only ask, because I believe, (without a shred of proof) that running the pump 24/7 is better than turning them on and off each day. I currently have three IntelliFlo pumps that have been running 24/7 for at least 10 years and so far no issues...

To be honest, you rarely seen any IntelliFlo failures that are motor or noise related.. Most of the ones I have seen are display and control head failures.

Like Allen, I would suggest going with the new IntelliFlo3, if things go South.. Note that the IntelliFlo3 requires some plumbing work.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi Jim,

Pump does start and stop early morning / late afternoon, about 10 hours/day.

I’ll pop the rear housing off as you suggest, maybe something has gotten in there.

I’ve had zero issues with the pumps for the thirteen years they’ve been in service, and it certain doesn’t sound like bearings are failing, so hopefully it’s just something “ticking” against the fan blade as you suggest. I’ll let you know.

Thanks for the detailed reply,
Michael

I would get a new Intelliflo3 when it dies.
Thankss. I’ll know soon enough.

Jim,

Removing and reinstalling the fan shroud appears to have solved the issue. I’ll see what happens today after a few hours of running . .
