    Add Chemicals During Winter?

Hi All! Do I need to add any chemicals to my Intex 15’ round above ground pool during the winter? To close it, I just plugged all the hose holes, removed the filter and skimmer, shocked with liquid chlorine and covered with a thick black pool cover. Any other suggestions are welcome!

    Manual heater bypass for winterizing

I have a Pentair UltraTemp heat pump that I winterize every year by manually turning the 3-way valves to bypass it so I can drain it, shut off the power, etc... but yet, still keep my filter pump running. I just ordered a new Jandy JXIQ gas heater with the built-in VersaFlo bypass that I plan...

Leave up and winterize a Coleman/Bestway AGP in midwest

I've always torn down and stored my Intex or now Coleman (Bestway) AGPs in the past, but I see so many people here saying they just winterize, so think I'm going to go that route starting this year. Found this blog post on here...

    Circupool RJ45+ Install Dummy Cell

I have removed my RJ45+ salt cell and the cord that connects to the main unit and installed the dummy cell. The main unit says "Cell Connection" and I don't know how to turn off the unit. Is there anything else I need to do or does it just say "Cell Connection" all winter?

    Winterizing Pool

For winterizing an AGP, what works better in the skimmer: gizmo, pool noodle, or just a plan old water bottle? What worked best for everyone?

New liner, new water, winterization chemistry question

We just had our liner replaced about a month ago. Fresh water delivered, and pool winterized by the pool store folks 2 days later. In speaking with the owner of the store, I had asked about the importance of getting the water chemistry balanced prior to winterization, and he said really the pH...

Sump pump in pool over winter?

We have an in ground pool in Maryland so we have to close the pool for about 7-8 months. The pool is a 30 year old concrete with plaster free form pool that we have only owned for 2 years. We have a “pool guy” that has helped us these two years. We have an old mesh safety cover for the pool...

First Winter - Questions About Closing

Hello fellow TFP members! The wife and I picked up a used Intex 18' Ultra XTR AGP back in July from someone in our neighborhood that was moving. I spent a fair amount of time cleaning it up. It was absolutely disgusting when we went to pick it up. There were literally tiny fish / tadpoles living...

Better to take down and store, or leave up and winterize

Have had Intex, Bestway, etc. type AGP for a long time. I've always taken them down for the winter and stored in a shed and I can get almost a decade out of them with some hole patching here and there. How long would the pool last generally speaking if left outside during Midwest winters? Just...

Need help - found hole on side wall of above-ground pool before winterizing

I've had my above-ground pool for just over 2 years (~28 months?) and I was taking one last swim before winterizing the pool and I found a 3/4" hole on the side wall of the pool. Do I need to replace the liner or should I try a patch? One of my concerns is that I won't be able to see the water...

Water level for closing my Coleman rectangular steel-frame pool

Hi all! I will be winterizing my above-ground Coleman rectangular steel-frame pool (22 x 12 feet) for the first time this winter (normally I would take it down and set it back up but it's a lot of hassle and a lot of $$ getting it refilled every year). My biggest hmm-haw is what should I bring...

Chicago intex prism frame winterize or take down?

So I’ve got a 16 foot prism frame intex pool. I’m still undecided on whether or not to leave it up and winterize or take it down for the winter. What is everyone’s experience in cold climate cities. I know that the manufacturer says to take down in cold climate but they also say taking down runs...

Best way to thaw an iceberg in a vinyl in ground pool?

I have a ~16ft x 32ft in ground vinyl pool and I live in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada where temperatures reach -40C = -40F in the winter. Because of these impressively low numbers I drain the pool below the skimmer and below the return lines (have to drop the water level ~3ft to do this). I...

    Conduit freeze worries?

Just moved to North Carolina to a house with a pool. Around here about half of pools run all winter. We decided to give it a try. Equipment pad is over a foot above pool level, so all water in the pool lighting conduits is below frost (1 foot). All good. The problem is the spa. Water there...

Using Recessed Auto Cover for Winter

Hello all, I'm new to pools. We just bought a house 2 weeks ago that has an in ground 22000 gallon pool with a recessed auto cover. I've called a couple places about getting the pool winterized. The both said that using the recessed auto cover is the best for a winter cover. I'm concerned...

    Pool Closing in Chicago

I have a Viking fiberglass 22K gallon pool with gas heat, salt cell, auto cover with 1 skimmer, 2 massage jets, 3 returns, 2 LED lights and 2 deck jets. The minimum pool closing cost here in Chicago is $475, & I’d like to start doing it on my own. After cleaning, balancing & shocking the pool...

    Winterizing with High CYA

I tested for CYA .... maybe about a month ago, and it was low, so I added the recommended amount. Just tested it again now, and the level is 90-100. (Don't know why that happened, but that's not the point of this thread.) I'm getting ready to winterize, and Poolmath says I need to add 11...
