what causes CYA to fall ? (no splash out!)

My skimmers do not leak either but when your pool is full of water open the skimmer cover and you will see the water level very high. I have not tested but it is possible that my skimmers are below the very top of the pool wall. Especially is some one has a pool with a raised coping the skimmer...

what causes CYA to fall ? (no splash out!)

I read some where that some species of algae eats CYA. Also, I get a lot of rain sometimes and eventhough the pool does not overflow I think the water escapes from the skimmer and seaps into the pavers. So eventhough it looks like water is not over flowing it does. Can any of these things be...

    Stains in plaster pool

How did you apply the MA? If you applied it directly to the stain using a pvc pipe or tube then try the vitamin C like Jason Lion suggested. Otherwise try to get the acid on the stain using a pvc pipe. I also used a squeeze bottle once but the pipe is better.

    High pH

Waterbear, I thought bringing down PH helped CL fight algae quicker?

    Partial drain due to CH

Did you notice dust while brushing? I also had CH rising after new plaster install. I have Diamond Brite and I suspect the installers did not acid wash. I did not see the aggregate until months of brushing. My fill water has 110 CH and in 12 monhs it went up to 540. I saw a lot of dust on my...

I am sure glad that others are able to understand this stuff and debate/add to the findings because it benefits us all.

    Pool Water Chemistry

I accidently wandered in here myself and I think I got a Brian aneurysm. Hey Sean, you need to put a warning on this advance chemistry section.

    LaMotte Borate Strips showing 25ppm

I did the Borate thing as well and I have no clue wether or not is is beneficial for my pool. I did not have a benchmark. I think if I waited 1 full season before adding the borates then I would know my pool better and can make a better judgement if it really helped me out. Some one replied in...

    LaMotte Borate Strips showing 25ppm

I would get a gallon of water and add 20 mule to get it to 50ppm and test with the strips. I'm sorry but I do not have the calculations to get 50ppm in 1 gal of water, but I'm sure someone will come along.

    Improvements to Pool Calculator

I have high CH (540) and I need to refill, my tap water has 120 CH. I did not see where I can find out how much my CH will drop if I drain x amout of water. Is this something that can be added to the Calculator?

    Chlorine/CYA Chart

How long (in hours) does it take for algae to grow if your CL levels stay below the minimum? Example, a pool with 40 cya and maintaining a 2 ppm and dipping into the 1ppm. Also, does water movement play a part in the development of algae? In other words, longer pump times keeps water moving...

    Adding Acid Via The Skimmer

I used to pour acid in a bucket of water and then add slowly around the perimeter.........until I got a solar cover. My PH climbs quickly so I add about .5 to 1 gal of acid weekly and now I find myself too lazy to remove the cover to add acid. So lately I have been adding it in my skimmer really...

    Chlorine consumption??

I'm in Miami and I lose about 2ppm a day with 40 CYA and keeping the pool at 4ppm during hot, sunny days. I agree with Mas that the more chlorine the faster it gets used up. I suggest keeping a log if you really want to know how your pool reacts. I expect 2ppm everyday, but sometimes I don't...

just got my TF-100 and here are my #'s

When you used the TF100 did you measure 25ml or 10ml of pool water? If you used 25ml each drop counts for .2 so 23drops x .2=4.6 If you used 1oml each drop counts for .5 so 23drops x .5 = 11.5 Most likely you have 4.5 FC

Unusual Chlorine Demand -- Peeing in the Pool

I missed this post when it first came out, but after reading it I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Being a very concerned OOL owner, I figured sooner or later some chemist will actually come up with the water color changing pee tablet, and quite frankly, I thought ChemGeek will be the one to...

    Why did Cal increase?

Joyce, My CH did the same thing. I had new plaster since April and my CH was 260 for 4 months, I think I had scale because my plaster had spots and looked white ( my ph crept to 8.0 a couple of times) so for the last 2 weeks I have lowered my PH to 7.2 and brushed with a combo (s/s with viynl)...

Cyanuric Acid Drop Over Summer with Chlorine

My CYA level has fluctuated as well. New pool in April, CYA level up to 45. End of May the rain over flowed my pool twice and I had to drain a total of 4 inches of water. I calculated less than 7% of my pool water but over those two months my CYA level went down to below 30, I added 4 lbs (i...

    Home Depot 15% Acid

My Home Depot sells the 31% as in Texasgirl's post. However, it costs $9.97 for 2 gals and my local pool store sells the same % for $4.33 a gal. Much cheaper at the pool store. This shows that is important to compare apples to apples when shopping. Also my pool store sells 10.5% chlorine at...

How long do you run your pump?

I've read that you need to filter your total pool water at least (minimum) once per day. This is called turn over. This is what mas985 is talking about. It all depends on how many gals your pump, filter and piping (plumbing) allow per minute. I have 2.5 inch piping and a 2.5 hp 2speed pump. My...
