Algae in Spite of Balanced Pool?

What are all of your levels, and how are you testing?

Why are recommended chlorine levels so low when you use pucks/tablets?

Follow the money. “Magic potions” generate lots of $$. No need to buy if you follow TFP methods. Most pool stores and pool service company business models rely on pucks and traditional recommendations. The pool service industry would be decimated if everyone followed the science. On the...

    Controlling Green Algae

The experts have already chimed in, but I wanted to add one thing. You said “I have more of a check question as to whether it is normal algae growth or excessive”. To be clear, there is no normal algae growth. Those that test regularly and follow TFP parameters don’t get any algae. I never...

Help! I've basically installed a brand new filter and still no results!

Here’s an analogy for you. Algae is like the canary in the coal-mine. Its growth is telling you that your chlorine is too low (in your case 0). What you are doing is the same as just removing the canary from the coal-mine. Yes, that would save canary lives, but would do nothing to address...

Did SLAM in Sept, still getting regular algae haze

That controller has a spillover function. Check the manual. I permanently closed my manual spa valve and program a spillover for 30 mins twice a day.

    Black algae ??

Here’s some reading for you: https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/category/pool-school/algae/ 7.5 is likely too low, but you’ll need to know your CYA level. https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2019/01/18/chlorine-cya-chart/ How are you testing your water?

One pool guy told me that Black algae is almost impossible to kill. Is it true?

It has calcium in it which will build up in your pool and lead to scaling. Not to mention the other issue with shocking. Not sure why you keep posting here if you won’t take the advice. Again, the best (and cheapest) way to chlorinate your pool is to put in just what it needs daily. The...

One pool guy told me that Black algae is almost impossible to kill. Is it true?

DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL AN EXPERT HAS CHIMED IN! I think they meant for you to refill first, then SLAM. They also told you not to pressure wash it. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to put bleach directly on your plaster, but again, let an expert say that.

One pool guy told me that Black algae is almost impossible to kill. Is it true?

The HDX is a lot cheaper. $4.48 for one gallon of 3% (maybe 5%) vs $9.98 for 3 gallons of 10%. Plus, no above mentioned foaming.

    Algea Question

42? That sounds like a pool store value. How are you testing your water? Using Trichlor I suspect it is much higher. Your chlorinator, even at “full blast”, still relies on the dissolve rate of pucks.

Pool Still Green After 2+ Weeks

Since you already have a test kit, you just need to add one of these: https://tftestkits.net/FAS-DPD-Chlorine-CC-s-test-p47.html https://www.amazon.com/Taylor-K-1515-FAS-DPD-Chlorine-75oz/dp/B003V4YZEO I also recommend getting the speedstir, it makes all your testing easier...

Pool Still Green After 2+ Weeks

I see your test kit in your signature now. You need a FAS DPD kit to properly test for chlorine. Your issue is that you haven’t been slamming at all.

Pool Still Green After 2+ Weeks

What test kit are you using? I noticed you reported Total Chlorine and combined chlorine. If those numbers are correct, your free chlorine is only 1. Well below slam level and also below the recommended minimum.

Saltwater pool confusion with algae treatment

What is "salt shock"? It's best not to rely on the marketing-speak product name and instead look at the ingredients. The word "shock" in the product label usually means it has some type of chlorine. But not always, you can find non-chlorine shock in the product name too. Avoid those. As...
