Aren't pools always green when they are opened?

My pool doesn't ever go green. Going on ten years. Close on Thanksgiving, open on March first. No chlorine nor algecide added while closed, no cover used either. I do brush it and vac with a battery powered hand vac on a pole to keep it clean though. One year I opened in April and I saw a tiny...

    Pool Opening Procedure Questions ?

I close late on Thanksgiving weekend and open early on March first. That can be helpful in having less swamp situation to deal with. My pool stays clear between November and March. No swamp. And no chlorine is added in those months. Then it's just maintaining chlorine from March to memorial...

    Clearing Iron stains before open?

The best way to spot treat, it will need to be underwater I think.

    Clearing Iron stains before open?

Crushed vitamin c tablets in a sock is what I use to spot treat. A handful dissolves within about 4-5 minutes. Use Jack's magic pink stuff sequestrant to keep it gone. The staining is probably all over and maybe not noticed as much. I'd recommend a full AA treatment. I was totally blown...

Copper ground wire - need to cover during winter?

Sounds like the Bond wire. It's fine as is. Just remember to reconnect it on opening day. Clean the connection to a shiny copper before reconnect.

Maybe try shimming it with something to fit better.

Leaf stains in new concrete deck - will patience, time and sun fix???

I get Tannen stains on the part of my deck below some arborvitaes. A light pressure wash makes it look just like new. Just water, no chems used.

    Pool pump died when closing

I close on Thanksgiving, open on march 1st. No chlorine added during that time and never had algae. Climate matters in that regard, but definitely do able.

    Help removing slight brown stain

Yep you have iron. Lookup AA treatment aka ascorbic acid. That will clear the brown.

Do I need to close my pool in the NW?

Correct. Pool is full, return lines up to the pad would have water in them. As Dirk pointed out, the frost line is pretty safe. All equipment drained. By the time Thanksgiving happens the water is near upper 40's so there isn't any algae growth. It stays at that temp up to March first. I know...

Do I need to close my pool in the NW?

I've had 5 winters as a pool owner here. Just outside of portland. We don't get the yearly deep freeze like the east coasters, so I leave mine open & water line at regular level. But I do drain the pump, filter & heater EVERY Thanksgiving. And a half gallon milk jug filled halfway with pebbles...

Insights to Speed Up SLAM ?

Without a running pump just add the chlorine and brush the pool thoroughly. Better than nothing.

Insights to Speed Up SLAM ?

There's no faster way to do it correctly. Don't forget daily brushing at least once or more daily.

    Vinyl Liner with Yellowish stains

Could be iron. My liner has some similar staining. Put some crushed vitamin c in a sock and place it over a trouble area for a bit. See if it lifts off. If so, likely traces of iron in your fill water.

    What a difference TFP makes!

Don't be surprised when guests comment how sparkly clear it is. I get that all the time.

    worst pool opening yet

You want to raise cya first. That way the sunlight uv isn't consuming the chlorine rapidly

Strange crystal clear to murky water

Ugh as if the cya test wasn't difficult as it is lol. I wanted to add, make sure the water sample for the cya test is room temp. Colder than 70 ish degree water throws off the results, looking even less clear which results in a falsely high cya reading.

So this happens when you don't close correctly

Ya very good lesson. I learned me one a few years back. We had a once every 10 year snow storm with sustained temps below 25 for two weeks. Like a complete dummy, I didn't drain anything. Though I DID put an empty milk jug with rocks in it, in the skimmer so that didn't crack. End result...

Pool Heater in Vancouver, BC - Winterize?

Ya just the drain plug. I take it you have some sort of heater bypass valve so you can continue operating the pump? We don't get heater damaging winters every year (about 300 ish miles south of you), but I learned the hard way it's best to drain the heater before the freezing months. I drain...

Submersible pump in closed pool needed in the winter?

In your region, during closing you'd have the pool drained below the returns. The pump would be used to ensure the water doesn't fill up the pool into the returns and beyond to prevent freeze plumbing damage. Just keep an eye on it once in awhile. you may or may not need to use the pump but...

    Highly-modified SLAM routine

Accurate test kit results are key to success. Without them you don't really know if it will be successful or a failure. What the pool store and guess strips say will likely not help. Pool store methods mixed with tfp doesn't really work, you have to follow one or the other.

    Who's Still Swimming in Maryland?

This has been the worst swimming season since I've owned a pool. (2014) Had a lot of cloudy rainy summer days when most of the country east was in heat waves. Typically I swim until the 2nd to 3rd week in september but my last swim day was labor day and I can see the forecasts saying 65-70 for...

    Winterizing a sand filter.

I agree, if it is drained there really isn't any reason to disconnect the pipes or remove the multi-port. I just remove the drain plug and set it for winter setting. I have the tf test kits glycerin filled gauge so no concern on that having freeze damage.

    White slime in cartridge filter

You have to replace water do reduce cya. draining a foot or two at a time then re-filling will get cya to a desired number. Not sure what is going on with your TA. mentioned turning yellow and I didn't see a number posted. If your ph fluctuates a lot then adjusting the TA will help. I know my...

    White slime in cartridge filter

You pick the number nearest to the markers on the test vial, since the test only works that way. That would likely be considered cya of 70 then, which is very manageable but would be good to reduce in the near future.

high chlorine usage but no increase in PSI

That will only happen if brush your pool and the water clouds up with dead algae. If your water looks clear there is nothing to clog/raise pressure to the filter with.

Ya CC doesn't always measure higher, if Algae is present. OCLT is the way to go as Jim said.
