Good on the Rola-Chem tubing. As for a pump, I agree with the above posts. I figure your filter's inlet and outlet are 1.5 inch so it would be easier to stay with a 1.5 inch fitting pump. Since your pump is still working, you have time to look and see what's out there in size and price...

When I had a superpump, I never put lube on the cover rubber ring. I never had any trouble with it. It came off sometimes but I would just put it back on and crank down in the locking knobs. If it leaks air you can see it thru the cover.

Can you see the backwash water as it comes out of the hose? When you first start to backwash, check the water to see how dirty it is.

If it something like this, if it is a bolt, there is a nut on the back that you will loose when you take it off. Then you will have to use one of those cheap fittings that screws into the coping. I don't see why you would want to remove the rope float anyways. If it is in you way disconnect...
