Keeping pool closed for extended period

Greetings all - I am contemplating keeping my pool closed for the upcoming pool season and would love to hear feedback regarding possible issues that I may encounter by keeping it closed for an extended period. I am in the mid-west and my pool season runs from April/May to roughly October. Due...

Thanks for the reply and clarification. Now it makes sense to me. Yes - it will take awhile to dissolve and I will likely take your advice and just use powder. By the way - I love the the pool math calculator on this site and even have the app on my phone and am learning to use it...many...

Raise CYA level via trichlor pucks

I need to raise my CYA 18ppm to reach my target of 40ppm. I would like to use the pucks that I have I storage to do this now that I use only liquid chlorine. My question is - how many pucks will I need to reach my goal? With pucks weighting about 6 ounces (or is it 8 ounces) with 10ppm of FC...

    Getting a new liner

You're welcome. I am sure someone will come along and post what you are looking for. Good luck with the replacement...just replaced mine a few years ago... demo of 40 metric tons of concrete decking and replaced with about 8,500 brick pavers and used white travertine as the new coping...worked...

Our neighbors expect an invitation to swim...

Funny thread. Option #1 - blame it on your homeowners insurance and your new policy...huge liability with non residents and their children swimming on your property - they are not an insured liability....maybe the neighbor would kick in $200 or so for added liability coverage. Option #2 -...

Does your pool have a Critter Kill Count?

That is an excellent idea - simple and effective! I do notice in drought conditions - which has been little to none this year - that every bird within 10 miles flocks to my lawn sprinklers when watering the lawn...kind of funny to see several bird species all using a common communal water source.

    Rain eating up FC

Greetings from Columbus - 36 miles east of you. I have had about 3" of rain lately - and about the only change in the water was that it pushed the PH down slightly - which was needed - other than that - not much changed.

Does your pool have a Critter Kill Count?

    - numerous frogs - a few birds - opossum - numerous moles - a few mice - a few rabbits I live in a suburban setting - so thankfully nothing larger than the above victim list. I have a large squirrel and chipmunk population - but no squirrel or chipmunk fatalities that I recall. I do notice...

What did you do to your pool today?

I can relate - in no particular order I have pull out of the skimmers or pool water: - numerous moles - a few mice - countless frogs - baby rabbits - baby opossum - a few birds I am sure I am forgetting a few creatures. Nothing like lifting the cover of your skimmer first thing in the...

High CYA levels...can I fix myself?

Your pool appears quite similar to mine...if you have have a bottom drain and (2) skimmers - you would close off both skimmers via shut off valve(s) thus you would be pulling from bottom drain only...then turn the veriflo valve to backwash...does this clarify at all? Also - that is good advice...

High CYA levels...can I fix myself?

Welcome. I just went through that about a month ago. My CYA was about 150 - 170...in any event I calculated that about 2/3 of the volume would need to come out...roughly 23,000 gallons. I just opened up the filter to discharge and let her rip. If I recall correctly - it took about seven hours...

    Swimming with the algae

I would say that the algae is not a danger by itself - however - the bacteria in the water that feeds on the algae waste may be a problem if ingested in some fashion by swimmers...I am others will stop in and offer their opinions.

What did you do to your pool today?

    Pool Volume Question

Greetings Oly - I would tend to agree with you - the more I think about it...I don't think that the difference in volume will be near what I thought it was. The pool is literally 20' x 40' with an extra 4' x 8' step area...I would think that I could multiply L x W x average depth of stairs =...

    Pool Volume Question

Nice to meet you as well.....maybe it is considered a 44' for winter cover purposes only and not necessarily for volume purposes...as the cover needs to be longer than 40' Thanks for the reply!

Is that pool going to increase the value of your house by $x?

I agree with "nope"...and would also add "however it does increase the comfort and relaxation level of my life" Sorry - I have no snappy comebacks...but I might add that being in the mortgage business - I have seen many home appraisals with pools. While it can certainly go both ways - I have...

    Pool Volume Question

This is likely a dumb question. I believe that I have been miscalculating my pool volume. My pool is rectangular and is 20' x 40' with 4' x 8' stairs thus making the overall length 44'. I learned this yesterday while shopping for winter pool covers. I have always considered it to be 20' x 40'...

    CYA level in Trichlor pucks

Thanks for the replies - I do appreciate it...I did just that and discovered that for each 7oz trichlor puck - based on my volume - my CYA would go up 0.8 ppm...does this sound roughly correct? Just got my new TF test kit....great customer service - speedy shipping and an excellent kit as well.

    CYA level in Trichlor pucks

I have a question regarding the CYA level in Trichlor pucks. I have read in this forum that "For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm" This makes sense and is the reason I stopped using pucks in favor of liquid chlorine. My...
