the only difference you will find by running it at night is a smaller energy bill. And no there is no benefit to running it an hour or two during the day.

The very first post for this discussion says that this work must be done by a licensed electrician. This could be dangerous when performed by owner. Unsafe!

Is a new pump worth it?

You don't need to replace the pump but the motor with a VS motor and controller. Call the inyo guys to get the correct one. Or spend more money and get a VS motor/pump.

    Swamp opening

Sun is not a factor in this scenario because this is trying to clear up water from opening. Consumption by oxidation is what i am concerned with on start up. CYA is a long term goal for save Chlorine from sun.

    Swamp opening

I dont add cya at first because i am just gonna pump it out on vac to waste. When you have a heavy load of "dirt" and other critters from a 8 month close there is a lot of vac to waste and slamming. Ben's original FC/CYA chart has about 12 mg for FC at 0 -10 CYA. That is typical for where i...

Lets ask Pennypat to keep the chlorine high for the next month then the "iron" stain will magically be gone.

    Exchanging water after pool opening

It never has been iron. your available cholorine is too low. You have the water reports to prove you dont have much iron. pool/softener salt does not have that much iron. the salt you buy at the hardware store is at least 99.6% NaCl.

    Switching From Sand To Cartridge

If you just want to spend money, get a VSP to save money. I would not replace a good sand filter just because it old. As big as your filter is you could use laterals from my hayward sand filter, mine is old and works well. your ROI will be years ahead with a VSP.

    Pool evaporation

If doing small refills one would not notice. If tracking year to year yes may possibly notice. Also if on city water, sources may change throughout the year. Very hard to track using hardness.

    Pool evaporation

Evaporation testing is a bit tricky when comparing different areas of country. Variables: Are you testing on June 21 the longest daylight time of the year solar IR vs. short daylight hours. Water temp Wind speed on top of water. turbulence from returns Humidity So when testing your pool make...

    Pool evaporation

No your fill water is the same hardness as the water leaking. That is unless you are gonna let a bunch like 25% of your pool water leak out then compare.

Upgrading SS Pump to VS Pump Questions

240 V feed. You have lots of options. How much do you want to spend upfront. Slower the pump runs the quieter it will be. 1.5" or 2" does not matter. Remember, all you are trying to do is run it just fast enough to have your skimmers work properly and or you SWG work. Personally i run mine slow...

    Pump Done?

There is research. why don't they with covers, because they are not needed. Covering could reduce the air flow which would be a detriment. Take a tour of your local waste water treatment plant and count how may motors are covered. None.

I am also here in the midwest. don't do anything other than put the cover back on. Your water will be fine when you open in the end of May, it will be like any other year. Whatever you do dont put anything in as you will be wasting your money. I have a mesh cover so it always gets some...
