    Post-SLAM, can a vacuum robot+filter replace a vacuum?

On the number of SLAMs that I have performed, I've always worked with a robot and filter to clean it up. I've found that the robot does help to kick up the dead algae and this helps to get it to the filter but of course it's really important to continue to do daily brushing as well.

Yep keep it at 20 FC until you successfully pass all 3 criteria for completion of the SLAM. Otherwise it might set you back.

    Mustard Algea or just dirt/pollen?

Yep the 3 criteria that you have passed the SLAM are 1.) Your pool is clear- no signs of algae dead or alive 2.) You pass the OCLT 3.) Your CC's are 0.5 or less You must tick all 3 to declare you have it licked- otherwise there is a good chance it comes back again and you go through the cycle...

    Mustard Algea or just dirt/pollen?

Just make sure you keep at the SLAM going until there are no signs of any of the dead algae in the water. Hopefully you should find that it will clear up over time. Remember to keep running the filter 24/7. Always pays to keep recording your FC levels as you go along as it allows you to track...

    Mustard Algea or just dirt/pollen?

Hi Doddsy. For what it's worth i think what you are describing is dead algae. It is hard to tell from the pictures. If it puffs away when you brush it then that is a tell tale sign. Unless it's fine dust. Dirt and sand just tends to move around. It only takes 1 occasion to drop below the...

What is this? Algae? Dirt? Dead algae?

When you use the traditional way of 'shocking' the pool by raising the chlorine temporarily you only keep it at bay rather than completely eradicating it for good. Algae tends to consume chlorine very quickly so you run out of FC and the algae comes back. Therefore the recurring algae means that...

Id say it's probably dead algae. What test kit are you using?

    G'day from Australia!

Welcome to TFP and bring on the summer times. :) Your pool is pretty small so you may consider using the Temporary Pools Guide for maintaining your pool. However the Clear Choice Labs test kit is a quality kit which will produce reliable results.

Aussie Help - Chlorine / bleach with hidden extras?

Welcome to the TFP. Yep the Australian bleach is generally weak and not good value for money compared to the liquid chlorine you can buy either from Bunnings or your local pool store (just compare prices for the cheaper option). The granular chlorine you mentioned has calcium in it which you...

Need Guidance on Use of Pool Cover

One of the other characteristics of CYA is that it buffers the harshness of chlorine. Keeping in mind that the effectiveness of FC is relative to the CYA level. Therefore, running a higher FC to suit a higher CYA level is often less harsh than a traditional pool running a lower FC with little or...

Need Guidance on Use of Pool Cover

Living in Dubbo, you'll definitely want to get your CYA up to 80. Personally, I would tend to keep your FC up at the higher end for insurance.

    What FC to maintain?

In summer it would generally be at least once a day if using bleach or liquid chlorine.

Need Guidance on Use of Pool Cover

I keep my cover on pretty much the whole time during summer to conserve the water and save my chlorine. Obviously we take it off when we swim which should be ample time to provide some UV rays to break down the CCS. In the off season I will take it off for an hour or so about once a week. You...

Setting up new fill, CH color change

I’m assuming your using the Clearchoice kit. If it’s going clear rather than baby blue it doesn’t sound right to me. Have you reviewed the testing instructions to ensure that you are doing your testing correctly?

    Pool Chemistry vs water appearance

I'd say that if you had only been SLAMMING since Friday then you'd still have a few days ahead of you to go. It would be unusual to be able to complete a SLAM in a couple of days especially in the presence of visible algae. Algae unfortunately is pretty resilient and requires patience.

    Black algae problem

As mentioned earlier and until you get one of the recommended test kits it’s likely your going to continue to go around in circles. We need reliable test results from one of these to be able to advise you what your next steps should be. The pool stores testing and advice is usually a poor...

    Mustard algae??

Id say that what you are describing is dead algae - of the normal kind not mustard algae. But some pictures might help out to confirm. Just use the normal SLAM process as you appear to be doing.

    Should I SLAM again?

Successful completion of SLAM= 1/) Clear water (including no signs of algae) 2.) CC's of 0.5 or less 3.) Passing the OCLT If you have not passed all 3 criteria you keep the SLAM going.

Just want to make sure I am doing this correctly...had some setbacks

The CYA is slightly acidic so when you add it through the sock it will naturally bring your pH down a little. Ideally you want to bring your pH to 7.2 for the SLAM, so taking into account the CYA addition aim for 7.4 when adding muriatic acid and it should bring you to about the 7.2 mark...

Just want to make sure I am doing this correctly...had some setbacks

Keep going with the party. The impact of the pH addition should be fairly immediate and if you keep squeezing the CYA in the sock it should dissolve fairly quickly. There will be a minimal impact on the speed of the SLAM process from swimmers. Just retest directly after the party and bring the...

Assume a CYA of 30 and add the appropriate amount of chlorine to get to 12 for a SLAM.

Just want to make sure I am doing this correctly...had some setbacks

You need to bring your CYA up to 30 to perform the SLAM correctly. You might be able to get on top of it initially but the the FC levels will never last long enough to knock the algae on the head completely which is what you must do to ensure it stays away.

    CYA Loss After Slamming

It doesn’t really matter whether you run it day or night but the most important thing to consider is that you want the SWG to maintain your FC above the minimum for your CYA at all times.

Ex Ozone, first test done. Not looking particularly good numbers wise-where do I start?

Your first priority should be to get your pH back into the 7's. However the best way to deal with this will depend on a precise number on the TA? I agree that you need to put the trichlor tabs to the side and get your levels back into the recommended range by dealing with each of the parameters...

    Combined Chlorine for Covered Pool

Ok- am I right to assume you are using a pool store to do your testing? We recommend doing your own testing for accuracy using one of the recommended test kits. This is the one- Clearchoicelabs- we suggest using in Australia. The smell you talk of is usually a build up of CC's although the...

    Combined Chlorine for Covered Pool

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum  First of all you'll find with a bit of reading around here that the cornerstone of TFP is keeping adequate chlorine levels in your pool as per the FC/CYA chart with one of the recommended test kits. Quite often pool owners look for complicated solutions...
