New Heater Installed, Check Valve is making things tough with a variable speed pump

Not sure how that's measured, but from the pool deck probably less than 1 foot higher, if you mean from the water inlet, closer to 2 feet

New Heater Installed, Check Valve is making things tough with a variable speed pump

It's a relatively simple hookup. When they installed the heater it did have a chlorine tablet feeder and I replaced it mid-summer with a salt generator. At that time I did remove the check valve, but my people who close the pool in the fall told me if anything went wrong, they'd look at the...

    Tristar VS pump trouble shooting

If it's a high-pitch whining sound, it might be the bearings in the pump or motor. Mine is starting to do the same after 10+ years.

New Heater Installed, Check Valve is making things tough with a variable speed pump

Last season I had a new heater installed after 23 year with a Pentair Minimax, with a new Pentair heater and the shop also installed a Jandy 7305 backflow valve. It seems to work fine, but the issue I'm having is the backflow valve requires the pump be on full (almost 3,000 RPM) or else...

Opinion on whether new heaters are more efficient

It's hard to say what's identical. We always keep our pool covered when we're not in it, and I would say if anything, this summer has been warmer than usual. We just filled up a few weeks ago, I'll have to monitor it.

    Cleaning Pool Heater - Update

So it's (or was) before the heater starts. I held down the Pool button for a good 20-30 seconds, and nothing appeared. I need to see about the stack flue sensor (I have no idea where its at). I'll dig through the repair manual.

Opinion on whether new heaters are more efficient

I have a roughly 20 year-old Pentair Mini Max NT heater, and I've replaced many parts on it to keep it running (blower mother, fenwal, three control boards, and now an igniter), and I'm okay fixing things from time to time, but it appears to me that our propane usage has shot way up this year...

    Cleaning Pool Heater - Update

So this is a follow-up to this old thread... here. I've had intermittent E05 errors through the years, most of have cleared by waiting a bit. I had previously replaced the Fenwal a year or two ago and the control board last fall and that helped, but I would occasionally get E05. I...

Pool habits/routines - Swim, Eat, Repeat!

I usually only test on weekends, the pH or TA levels don't change much on a daily basis, and if they do .1 or .2 difference isn't a big deal. I check Saturday morning, add something if needed and check Sunday evening to see that my adjustment worked.

Keeping my pool open in Maryland this winter

No need to apologize. This has been an adventure for me, and while I asked a question, I'm also giving my experience so when someone reads this five years from now hopefully my successes (or failures) will help them. --Tom

Keeping my pool open in Maryland this winter

My best rule of thumb is that even with an electric cover, the water temperature will tends towards the nighttime lows in your area. And I like the water at 85 degrees. I get up early and do laps to start my day, and so when I get in, I want to feel "ahhhhh", rather than "AUUUUUGH"

Keeping my pool open in Maryland this winter

I wanted it done in fall; I GC'd the pool and deck refurb and that's when I had time time do it, plus there were significant discounts from everyone doing it in the fall. The other thing it did was that it gave the deck people time to restore all the landscaping and get the grass regrown...

Keeping my pool open in Maryland this winter

It may void the warranty, but as the thing is almost 18 years old, it's hardly my primary concern ;) Plus if a part breaks, I'll buy it on ebay or amazon and fix it yet again. . I'm getting to know this heater pretty well; it's like an old friend. Unfortunately.

    2018 Bleach Prices

As a closer to this thread, the WSJ reported over the weekend that the makers of products like bleach intend on raising prices in 2019. As you can see, it is now common to lower the percentage of bleach down to 6%, so the 2019 thread will be quite interesting to see how pricing and...

Keeping my pool open in Maryland this winter

The water is looking quite good and everything is working quite well through the week-long cold snap. It's a matter of temperature monitoring and ensuring the water stays around 40 degrees. I took advantage last week of the warm (60 degree) weather. Things area actually working according to...

Pentair MiniMax NT does not ignite - error E05

How did you remove it? I don't see a way to get it out.

Pentair Minimax NT error code E05

I'm curious looking at the pictures of the heater exactly where the flame sensor is, and the other one is how to get at the igniter. I see it sitting there, but it appears it sits behind a large galvanized piece of metal with no obvious way to remove it.

Keeping my pool open in Maryland this winter

My plaster was just finished in my refurb November 1, and I wanted to keep the pool open a full 2 months to let the plaster cure. My plaster is pretty well cured, although as you'd expect, the pH keeps rising a bit. But my overall chemistry is pretty much dead on. In looking through the weather...

    Calcium leve stuck

I used Puri Tech calcium chloride. $28 shipped on ebay. I've bought two boxes so far. It's pretty basic stuff; it looks like what they do is buy industrial bags, divide it into smaller lots and resell it. I like it. It dissolves quickly and I haven't noticed any odd effects in the pool.

Pentair Minimax NT question (not what you think)

I mean the LED segments have been burning out one by one over the past 4 years until it's hard to tell the temp. I was going to do the switchover this weekend, but I got involved in many projects, including a now complete replaster. Keeping the water balanced and the leaves out is not for the...

Pentair Minimax NT question (not what you think)

That's true. I'll probably give it a shot next weekend; I've been swamped dealing with the house stuff and the new replaster trying to get the water balanced and plaster brushed.

    Resetting Pool Tiles

To your first question, this is what I've used in the past with very good success: E-Z Patch 22 Neutral Cure Silicone Rubber Pool Joint Sealant - 10 Ounce Cartridge. It's very expensive, but it has the nice quality that will work well at the water line, it's easy to clean with soap and water...

Pentair Minimax NT question (not what you think)

So yes, I do have the occasional E04 error, but I think I've traced that down to a bad igniter. I just have to figure out where the igniter is.... but ignore that for the moment. No, what real question is about the 3 digits LED display. Over the past 3-4 seasons, the LED display has...

Pool Refinishing - Wet Edge versus Diamond Brite

I'm hardly an expert, but I just reviewed the various bids to determine which made the most sense for our current renovation. Here's my takeaway: There's sells POP (Plain Old Plaster), which is smooth, classically beautiful, and the cheapest (less labor to install). But it's the least durable...

    Sealing the Skimmer

I've never used sikaflex, but it appears very interesting for many uses, and might work here. The website (Sikaflex Self-Leveling Sealant | SIKA) says the maximum gap is 2". It will, however, not match the color of your pavers based on the video on their site. I don't see a downside to...

    New project in Encino CA.

On the lap thing... do you mean you want to make a lap equivalent to an olympic lap? If so, then you'd have to make it 25M long ;). Now if you're really concerned about swimming a lap, you could make it 12.5M long and down/back would be a lap. If you're asking if 31 feet is enough length to...

Pool Renovation, need help with new chemistry.

I generally use several of them , so that sounds like good advice to continue with that. Once I get it balanced in the spring, after startup, my chemistry is stable through closing in early november. And it sounds like the primary thing I'll need is lots of acid. as both of you have pointed...
