    Liner Steps are Slippery

I would say over the years it has slightly improved (became less slippery). I think some wear on the steps has helped do that. I no longer warn people but will still be cautious on them and ensuring no kids are running up or down them.

    Equipment Location

I vote for B by the A/C units. Like noted in the summer your AC will be running and louder than any pumps. I like the idea of having all my mechanicals in one spot. It may also save some money on having to run power out to pumps/heaters since its near the house. Do some nice...

Brand new pump running dry for hours

I would at least expect them to come and replace any seals that could have gotten ruined by running dry. The only time I ever use a pool company is to close my pool at the end of the year. One year they closed it all down but never tripped the breaker on the pump - so it turned itself on per...

Furniture the good, the bad, and....

We have the basic coated/painted aluminum pool side furniture. Its held up well for us. Do spend a bit more on getting Sunbrella type of cushions - I think they make a big difference and worth it. We also have a deck-side box we store the cushions in when not in use which I'm sure helps. And we...

New Vinyl Pool Build - Pittsboro NC

We too went with Rising Sun and no issues as we head into our 6th pool season. One piece of advice is to have them perhaps install the threaded unions on the pipes that go into the sand filter. They didn't do that on mine and I'm going to have to go in and add them in a few weeks so I can get...

    AquaCal heat pump

My pool isn't much larger (at least based on the size you have in your sig) and I have an AquaComfort 75k BTU heat-pump. A heat pump is meant to provide an on-going slow amount of heat and run for a longer time. Versus a gas heater which I would say delivers more heat in a shorter period of...

    Pool excavation/removal

Not a direct help but the house behind ours that recently was sold had their vinyl pool just filled in. Granted I never saw the former owner in it nor the new one's so to each their own - made me cry on the inside a bit though! But being able to look over the fence I think they just had 2...

    Walk-In Pool Steps

For what its worth after all the other comments: - We have 6' wide vinyl lines steps. As noted they are steel steps, then covered with a foam padding before the liner goes atop them. Not fully backfilled so the top 2 steps does have a bit of a 'springy' feel to it. - I would say they did...

    Floating Liner Help ?

Hey all, did some searching already but could use some more advice. We've had about 8" of rain over 2 days here! Now we've had major tropical storms and rains before but this is the first time the liner has floated and pulled away from the coping and walls. 1. I noticed this morning my...

    backwash hose?

I haven't heard of the used fire-hose option! I may look into that. I've always had to use the flimsy 50' blue "hose" - and at best I usually get 1 year out of it before it just bursts at the seams and makes a crazy mess all over. It would have been ideal to hard plumb it underground to the...

To heat or not to heat?

I can speak for the area I guess. When we got our pool installed we paid a bit extra to get it "pre-wired" for a pool heater. At the time its not much cost since they are build it anyways and running electrical. From there we used the pool for the first season just to get a feel for what it was...

New Build - Vinyl Lagoon in North Carolina

Looks good! I remember this time 4 years ago getting ours installed! It may be too late now..but when we did ours we had an option for the skimmer lid to be "poured" with the same concrete as the decking so it becomes hidden. With the warm weather we've had recently makes me really want to...

    Considering Vinyl

I wouldn't say it "feels" cheap to swim in. Its obviously not going to look like a concrete pool and one can tell the difference. However given the cost differences (at least in our area) it made sense with vinyl. Not to mention the neighborhood and house prices can't justify the added expense...

Lounge Chairs vs Deep Seating vs Dinning Set

I agree with the above. When I was designing my pool and patio area I laid out what seating I wanted and where to ensure the concrete patio would accommodate it all. Went online to find general dimensions of each item. 2 lounge chairs with a table (used the most and sun facing), a 4 person...

    Cover pump for the winter?

If I recall my Hayward pump manual says to NOT cover the pump since condensation can get trapped under the cover and lead to rust or other issues. Not sure if its a big deal one way or another.

    Do you have pool regrets?

Like many others here we definitely don't regret getting a pool. We installed it right after our first boy turned 1. We now have a 4.5, 2.5, and 2 month old. Swim lessons year round have been a must. - I wanted a pool more than the wife. It took about a year to get around to it. One of the...

    New build in Raleigh NC

Looks very nice! As for decking we ended up with right at 1000sqft. When I did my deck design I layed out where I would have my grill, firepit, 2 lounge chairs with table, our 4 person table top, etc.. All the things we wanted around the pool and then sized the decking to comfortably fit each...

    Remove return jet fittings

Try a rubber strap style adjustable wrench...more commonly as an oil filter wrench. Pick up at any auto parts store for probably less than $10.

Hard time finding pool contractor we want to use

We went with Rising Sun for our pool. We had good experiences with them, granted it was winter time and they dug in February so may not have been as busy, but never had any issues with quick responses to emails, quote changes, and having them come out a couple times to talk through the design...

Is this Dirt or Dead Algae sitting at bottom?

Good point. I'm going to go with the more whooshes away scenario pointing to the dead algae. Given the pool is clear and numbers have been good - whats the best next step then to help clear that up?

Is this Dirt or Dead Algae sitting at bottom?

I am wondering if I have just fine dirt/silt that settles to the bottom of the pool or is it algae/dead algae? Its brown in color and it settles at the bottom of the pool when the pool is still. I recently vacuumed it all out (not to waste) and then about a few days later more of it appeared on...

Any tricks to removing a tight pool jet return fitting?

Auto Oil filter wrench. Its a "rubber" wrench but probably a bit more industrial than the type used to open can lids. Also pretty cheap at most auto parts store.

Solar Covers - The 'economy' version

-Ours is a blue colored cover. - Going on 3 yrs now and no signs of life issues or anything. - I only use mine for about 2 months total, in April/May and then in Sept. I found storing it and cleaning it properly before storing it out of the elements tends to help its life. - Originally had it as...

Why our heads are about to explode....

I do enjoy the nice winter we've had here in NC. While I usually wait for the yellow snow season to end before opening up our pool; this year I"ll be doing it early probably next week, fire up the heat-pump, and let my allergies suffer through it for a bit.

    Insurance & Diving Boards

A few years back when we were looking at building our pool I called USAA also as thats who we have to understand the potential costs...and as I recall from memory a few years old. I was expecting a huge "oh a pool" here is a super high rate or we won't cover such an item. They didn't ask about...

Pool Accessories - What Do You Have

Essential sitting areas: 2 lounge chairs with a table between them. 4 person rectangular table with umbrella. Deck box - first thing we got: Gotta store all those cushions and fun toys! We found a cheap 'dorm room' small fridge we placed up on our screened patio near the pool we stock with cold...

Heat Pump or Natural Gas Heater

Two comments and experiences. My parents, who live in K.C., have a gas heater for their pool. Myself in NC we have a heat-pump. They use their gas heater to heat the pool on those days in the spring/fall when you get a nice warmer weekend and want to jump in the pool. Thats not going to be as...

    Quoted/Contract Price vs Actual/Final Price

Perhaps we were lucky but our entire project came in dead on budget. Granted we did a very extensive upfront review multiple times with the pool builder and concrete company and other subs (grass, fence, etc...) to prevent any un-forseen issues. I feel the more you can do upfront and stick to...

    Music outside

I built a "custom" blue-tooth speaker setup. Found the instructions and info on this site a couple years ago. Around $120 for it and all from Amazon. Wired it into the crawl-space of house near pool, ran the speaker wires to a few outdoor speakers to get music into the screen porch and out...
