Ph Test goes from 7.6 to purple quickly

Hi, I've got a situation I've never seen in the 30+ years of pool ownership. When I test the Ph, it initially looks fine (~7.6). But then, after about 30 seconds, it turns deep purple. The Free Chlorine is about 4.4, CC is about 0.4. Water temp is 52.0 degrees F. Should I be concerned? The Ph...

    New App is .. different

I see the app has changed the past day or so. The interface is different, and now it flags CC; mine's at 0.2, which I thought was okay (SLAM guidelines say below 0.5). I did have a CC issue and just finished a SLAM BTW. Any idea why the change? Ron

    July Vacation

Do you recommend the K-1766 test kit? FYI, the pool was filled last summer (new liner and skimmer). I generally avoid visiting the Aquaquip Store for testing; they just wanna sell me a bunch of chemicals I don't want or need. Ron

    July Vacation

Yeah, I've heard only good things about running Salt Water in a pool. But for my ancient pool, made from steel with aluminum coping, that's a non-starter unfortunately. I've got enough corrosion to deal with as it is. Ron

    July Vacation

Thanks, I'll go with the Polyquat, balance the pool, and shut it off and leave the floating cover on. Worst case I'll have to SLAM it when I get back. I typically run the CYA at 45, so a FC of 6.0. Ph 7.6. Ron

    July Vacation

We are going on Vacation in July for 9 days. I don't have anyone who I'd trust to keep the pool balanced. I'm thinking of doing this: Add Polyquat Balance the pool. Turn off the heat a couple days prior. When we leave, shut it off and leave the floating cover on. What do you guys think...

    Replacing concrete pool deck

I agree with ruleandrews, the coping would be damaged. Our pool is vinyl lined, with an aluminum coping. I'm looking at either a total patio replacement, or replace one bad section (not adjacent to the pool). The Concrete guy says the coping will be fine if he replaces everything, but I don't...

Bleach v corona virus - backup plan?

FYI, the Home Depot that has stock here is the one in Redmond. Lots of the wrong bleach so be careful.

Bleach v corona virus - backup plan?

Hi folks. Out here in the Eastside of Seattle it's kinda crazy with Covid-19. Last week I went to my nearby Home Depot, and I only found 2 gallons of the Germicidal HDX bleach. So today I checked their online stock (which usually is reliable). For every store nearby it said, "Low stock, visit...

    Replacement Heater Question

Thanks folks! I'll go with the standard Copper Fin version then. I do find it strange that Raypak wants the user to run Free Chlorine at/below 3.0. I know that has been discussed here before, with the conclusion that the CYA ties up some of the actual Chlorine, so my running 6.0 FC with 40 or...

    Replacement Heater Question

My old Teledyne-Laars Heater finally died - it's like 35 years old. So I'm going with a new Raypak Heater. I have two options - a regular Copper Fin Tube heat exchanger with Polymer (read: Plastic) headers, and a Cupro-Nickel Fin Tube heat exchanger with Cast Iron Headers. My pool is...

Ready to go! (well, once it warms up :))

I just gotta say again - thanks everyone who helps folks like me out. I vacuumed the pool this morning, and except for the water being 55.2 Degrees, it is ready to go! Living in the Northwest, I just keep the pool full all year long, and balanced. Obviously it needs a lot less Chlorine in the...

    Deck all set up!

Pool of course is good to go (just a little cold still). Water is nice and clear. The only thing I haven't added is Boric Acid yet.

    How to add Boric Acid

Like the title says; I have a fresh fill on my 21K gallon vinyl liner pool. Brand new liner 2 weeks ago. TA is good at ~100, CYA is ~35 (boy it felt weird adding CYA after the mess I had 2 years ago to get most of it out of the old water); PH about 7.4. FC around 3 to 5, depending on the day...

Recommend wrench and lube for the union and rings

For lubricant/sealing of rubber o-rings I have been using silicone grease; the local hardware store should have it. Silicone Grease Doesn't eat up the rubber, seals well. Probably the same stuff as in the Magic Lube II, but I can't say for sure... Ron

Sodium DiChlor to raise Cyanuric acid

Hi folks, I'm coming off my first winter in the Seattle Area after switching to Bleach last summer. Before that, I used to use the Skimmer Sticks from the local Pool Store. CYA was thru the roof a year ago. After a bunch of dilution and a SLAM, the pool is beautiful. My situation now is the...

    Pool SLAM combined chlorine question

Thanks, I'll check the overnight FC loss tonight. If all is good, I'll set the pump to run 4 hours a day. During the summer I typically run the pump from late morning to early evening, that way it 1/ Can keep the pool up to temp with swimmers and 2/ filter out the junk that falls in during...

    Pool SLAM combined chlorine question

Hi: New the the forum, but a long time pool owner (29 years). 16x32 in ground vinyl lined pool (~21K gallons), Seattle, WA area. Last year I chased combined chlorine, running my CYA up to about 150. I (partially) blame the high CYA it on a dry previous winter, typically we get a lot of rain...
