    Blackbirds/Grackles

Same here, I thought I was crazy. The neighbor has an arborvitae screen next to our pool and I see the Common Grackles hanging around the pool during mid spring and and several "mines" dropped everyday.

    New Hayward/flow controller??

Thanks kadavis! I see that is an older user manual. My new pump has different illustrations and did not explain the flow controller at all.

    New Hayward/flow controller??

Just setting up a new Hayward EC40 filter. It came with a "Flow Controller" but no instructions. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to use it?? I have a very vague recollection that this is for certain situations.

    FC levels and trichlor

I'm just curious . . . Assuming my pool water has near 0 PPM of CYA, and I chlorinate using trichlor tabs, will that chlorine that is bound with CYA, be stabilized enough to maintain FC levels through a sunny day? I was just wondering, especially when opening a pool, insted of adding CYA I could...

Cat walk deck, skimmer basket access

Hey, Wondering if I could get a couple of tips. The access to the top of our skimmer/basket is blocked by the 18" cat walk decking around our pool. As of yet, I have not figured out an easy way to add DE to my filter when needed. We've been adding DE to a bucket of water, making a gruel and...

    Is this algae???

I believe it's dirt. We were perplexed by this sediment for years, wondering if it indeed was mustard algae. The sediment in our pool even has a brown/yellow coloring. It always settles in the seams and depressions in an identical pattern every time. But we now know it is simply pollen, dust, et...

    Dirt keeps reappearing

Our pool does this every year. I thought it might be mustard algae at first, (it had a brown/yellow appearance etc). But it turned out to simply be pollen and dirt. I'll see these "streaks" appear again the next day but it takes close to a week before it's at the same quantity. Annoying, but no...

    SLAM finished?

Regarding your last question. The important number is the minimum number - 3 ppm. The "target" numbers are a suggestion to reach so that your water will never fall below 3 ppm. My numbers are the same as yours. I will raise my chlorine levels to 6 most evenings. Usually it will only fall 2...

    . . .and thanks again TFC and TFTestkits . . .

I've been buying all my chemicals at Ocean State Job Lot. I was sceptical at first but everything has been spot on and at a much reduced price. Their bleach is outstanding. 12.5% for $2.99 and the strength is again, spot on every time. - - - Updated - - - I know, I think of that often but you...

Thanks again, again TFC and TFTestKits. . .

We have a chain of stores here in Massachusetts called "Ocean State Job Lot." I've been buying 12.5% bleach there for 5 years now. It's always been $2.99 a gallon and has always been stable and reliable.

My pool store told me they don't recommend backwashing! Huh? Empowered Owner!

Just a thought. I average less than 1 backwash a season and have never needed to acid-treat my DE filter after 4 years. I believe that is a "when needed" situation. When my pressure rises above recommendations, I then use the "bump" handle and everything is fine. I probably "bump" 6 - 8 times a...

    Free Chlorine Levels

I always begin with the range that is listed in "PoolMath" after all your numbers are input correctly. My pool is also at 40 ppm CYA so the CL range is listed as 3 - 7 ppm. Seven is more suggestive, I want to have enough chlorine in the pool to last till the next 24 hrs when I'll test and add...

    Year 2 underway... love TFPC!

This morning I have had the pleasure to experience what I love most about the knowledge gained here--process of elimination. The pool has been opened near a week. The chlorine is dropping too fast, 4.5 ppm the last two days. So, is the bleach weaker than advertised or is it algae looming in the...

Brand new AG just installed, brand new to TFP, a couple of questions?

I'm a converted skeptic. I fought the philosophy of this website for the first two years. It works! Do get a test kit. I always buy the T-100 from TFTestkits, it's never let me down. Do buy your chemicals where they are inexpensive. Ocean State Job Lot is excellent. 12.5% bleach for $2.99 a...

    amcnulty in East Tennessee

Re: amcnulty new to pools I always try to get chlorine in as soon as possible, I don't want the water sitting in the sun unprotected. But straight chlorine will not last long at all without stabilizer which comes under many names but is always cyanuric acid. Enter in your pool specs in the...

    Cya. Testing vs, reality

Hi: I'm aware that we should not trust the accuracy of our CYA measurements till at least a week after we add stabilizer, but is it effective as soon as it's in solution? Thank you.

    Adding DE after backwash

Okay, I have to ask. I know the conventional wisdom on this sight is to add a percentage (haven't looked up the number yet) of the required DE after a backwash. Seems logical. It's obvious that all of the DE will not leave the filter after a backwash, but should I override the instructions of...

    Finding the CYA sweet spot

That's been my experience exactly. I was hoping to keep my CYA at 30 ppm but was losing 'bout 4 ppm of chlorine a day. After raising the level to 40, and after a few days, suddenly my chlorine loss slowed down significantly. We are now losing 1 - 2 ppm a day.
  28. Whatrymes

How much chlorine do you put in daily?

We average about 2 ppm a day (22 Oz of 12.5%) with cya at 40 ppm. Just a note, our cya was 30 at the beginning of the season and we were losing 4 ppm a day. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
