What happened to the poolside paradise topic?

I thought it was its own topic. Is it subtopic somewhere?

Using solar panels as UV meters

I'm dialing in my SWG, and coincidentally was looking at the solar energy app. It maps the electricity produced every day, which should be closely correlated to UV. I'm thinking of putting the data into a spreadsheet and using it to help keep the SWG dialed in. Has anyone done this?

Florida folks - what's your daily chlorine loss these days?

I'm just getting everything going after a SLAM (first one ever, blaming the holidays). I added CYA yesterday, will do a full test in a bit. I need to get my SWG going again, and need some initial target numbers for percentage and run time. I'm targeting CYA of 70. I'm going to let the FC drift...

    Dumb question - manual vacuum

We've had our pool for 5 seasons, and have never vacuumed it. Of course, our robot died right as we're trying to clear our first green pool ever. Sigh. New one is one the way. First SLAM (ever) is going well, and it's time to get rid of the dead stuff. Our PB plumbed for a vacuum. Is there any...

Cracked SWG nut. Will this work?

The nut on our Aquarite t-cell is cracked and leaking. Rather than cut off the whole connection and replumb, would something like this work? https://optimumpooltech.com/product/salt-cell-union-split-nut/

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Almost 5 years of pool ownership, and I have the dreaded green pool. Combination of holiday neglect, major tree removal next door (huge dirt event) and lots of rain. I just cleaned the really gross filter. Hubby is off fetching liquid chlorine. I'll get the pH down into the low 7s, and get this...

    It's autumn, Florida style!

Pool temp has dropped to 84 degrees. Brrrr! New solar cover going on this afternoon.

    Sunshades for mansard cage

We love our big cantilever umbrellas, especially with the heat we've had this summer. They are 4 years old now and after this season we'll need to replace them or do some extensive maintenance/repair (replace fabric figure out a solution for rusting base). Im thinking of mounting sun...

TFP sparkle after weeks of hot temps and vacation!

If you're on the fence about getting an SWG, consider that I've barely touched the pool in the better part of two months... three trips in a row, with barely enough time to do laundry in between.. got home last night. FC is perfect. pH is high, just added some acid. But look at that sparkle!

    Side suction filter bag?

We have never used our side suction vacuum. We bought a robot and never looked back. BUT we get sand and dirt accumulating in corners of the sunshelf and spa. I bought a handheld battery operated stick vac, which works ok, except the "bag" is tiny, and it requires 4 D cell batteries, which are...

    Before and after pics thread

I love looking at the before and after TFP photos. Sadly, it's hard to follow all the threads. Could we have a permanent thread here, (in the spirit of the pool color and how clear is your TFP threads), where folks post their before and after photos, with a note on how long it took to go from...

Just changed my dolphin s200 cord!

It was an easy DIY. He's 4 years old. Hopefully we'll get several more years out of him. Before: After:

Trying not to jinx myself. Who else has never had to SLAM?

We started with TFP during our build in 2019, and have never done a formal SLAM. Once or twice a season I may need to bump up the chlorine to just above target level, when the pool is clear but not sparkling, and I haven't been dialing up the SWG enough to keep up with longer, sunnier, hotter...

    Deluge!

So, we're getting MUCH needed rain (yay!), to the tune of several inches in a few hours. I went out to start draining, then checked that the water was flowing out. My nice, WARM water was flowing out. ☹️ I just turned off the heater and chlorinator until we finish draining, (an hour or so) and...

    Replacement filters.. brands, quality?

It's time to get another filter for our pool. We'll deep clean the current one to have as a backup. How has your luck been with non-oem filters? Any brands to avoid? It's for a Hayward C200s filter. Thanks!

Choosing a slide (gave up on 90 degree corner idea)

So our littles still love the little tykes slide that we are using as a pool slide, but they'll outgrow it soon. The side of the pool where I'd like to install a real pool slide has a pretty narrow patio. One thought is to have the "stair" portion of the slide run along one side of the pool, and...

    Cleaning paver patio

Well, we're getting ready for our big Memorial day party on Monday. Cleaning the patio and ugh, it's filthy! I've been sweeping, vacuuming, and hosing. Pool is 4 years old now and there's a bit of settling in some areas, so the water doesn't run straight to the drain everywhere. We have a...

    Swim lesson time!

We are blessed to have our littles nearby. In addition to the pool fence and very mindful supervision (we usually have one or more designated pool watchers, complete with hat, or designate, on the fly, who's watching which little) we pay for swim lessons. The last few years they were private...

    Morton's salt... Different?

I just added salt to my pool. In the past we had a salt that was little flat crystals that practically dissolved as soon as they hit the water. The Morton's pool salt that we got from Home Depot had very large crystals that sank to the bottom of the pool. In case I have to add some more, what's...

I don't understand people who don't get SWGs

We just returned from 6 weeks away. pH is a little high, FC is perfect, CC 0. I have two friends who each did a very expensive pool renovation, and each didn't add a SWG to their setup. They pay a service. One friend said she isn't swimming yet, because her previous service guy was AWOL, and the...

    Ugh. Brown pollen time...

Pool chems are fine. I'm getting tired of all the "birds and bees and flowers and trees" going on all over the place. Not sure if its oak or pine, but I'm changing the hairnet in the skimmer twice a day. Holding off on cleaning the pool filter until I think we're done. And of my west central...

Oops - I wonder what my pH is?

So, I added CYA (7-8 pounds) and that is now looking good (70). I also started running the pool 24/7 to heat it up. I also got a migraine (my excuse for what happened next). I got all my shiny new reagents from TFTests, and did a full suite of tests. Chlorine through the roof! 22. (it's still...

New swim season, new Dolphin cord tangle thread

Well, we're gearing up for 80 degree days. Pool balanced, salt added, robot running, new reagents ordered. Aaaannd cord tangle from heck. I've re-read the old cord tangle threads. Last year I disassembled the swivel and added lubricant. I can manually swivel it, but when it's working it's clear...

Pool "opening"... Thanks TFP (and swg)

So, grandkids were over yesterday and the weather was nice, so we thought it was time to heat up the spa for some fun. I haven't tested the pool in months. Christmas, covid, etc. But I've been running the pump, and I knew the chlorine had to be in the ballpark because the pool is crystal clear...

Not quite closing ... Florida pool/spa

Loving the spa today, and like this time every year I'm thinking of treating the spa (mostly) separately from the pool this winter, only running the pool filter once every couple of weeks, to circulate the water. This would allow us to keep the spa closer to our desired temperature, saving on...

Tackling calcium nodules while water is low....

So, we have calcium nodules that have developed around our spa. (They are only around the spa, nowhere else in the pool.) I drained the pool anticipating more rain than we got, so while it's low I want to deal with them. What do you recommend? Acid (what percentage, how to apply?) Knock them...

    Sharing your poolside paradise

This morning's paper had an article about a pool-sharing website, where you can rent out your pool by the hour. Prices around here range from $40-$75 per hour. For those who are getting hit hard by the rising costs of pool chemicals (and everything else) and who feel like sharing their little...

Maytronics/Dolphin s200 swivel cord not swiveling --- anything to try before replacement?

Our robot is three years old, and a couple of runs around the pool create a tangled cord mess. I'm guessing that the swivel has stopped swiveling. I can manually turn the cord in the swivel "thing". Is there anyway to clean or lubricate the swivel part, or are we stuck with replacing the whole...

What if the cya test used lines or a letter instead of that (insert adjective here) dot?

So the dot gets fuzzier until it (subjectively) "disappears." What if they used a different shape or symbol? Could that make consistent readings easier?

3 years in... Folks, this method WORKS!

A year ago I posted this "When I post, I usually post on the testing and balancing thread. But I know that lots of folks are coming here with issues, and wondering "does this work?" as they tip their toes into the TFP method. Whether starting with a new pool or arriving after dissatisfaction...
