    High CYA.

Is guess your original zero CYA test was the result of the PH being so low. Must have caused test strip failure. Using pucks forever, the 150+ figure makes sense. You will need a very high FC # to keep the pool clean with CYA so high. Since we don't know how high it actually is, that is not...

About to do my first backwash

I am not an expert, but I agree with not making these decisions based on time when you have more accurate and case-specific options such as pressure and/or a visual cue such as spillover. For example, I have a back yard with an 8ft tall privacy fence and drains in the deck. Very little crud...

    Pump Replacement Quote(s)

Hey all, My Hayward pump seems to have sputtered to an unfortunate end after just 3.5yrs. Last night the pump shut itself off, with the display indicated the pump had stalled. Attempts to restart resulted in a quick "vrr" and then another stall. Had a tech out today who I like a lot, the...

For you, is the battery inside the main board or the remote?

    Automation needs a new watch!

I've got an Aqualogic automation system running a Hayward VSP and Polaris pool cleaner. These components all work, but the automation system cannot keep track of what time it is. This began happening within the last week, and I can't find any discernable pattern to the failures. What happens...

Where is this water coming from?

Here are some more pictures. Literally 0 water coming through the backwash "window" with pump running, and some better shots of the plumbing.

Where is this water coming from?

I let the spigot run for about 2 minutes fully open - enough that I'd be shocked if there was still water in the backwash pipe. I do not attach a hose or open the spigot to backwash normally - the pool is piped into a waste line that goes to sewer (or so I was told.) I can also drain water...

Where is this water coming from?

Refusing to believe I was losing 4"+ of water per week to evaporation, I investigated and discovered that my backwash/pump valve was leaking water into backwash every second the pump was running. I seem to resolved this by taking the big key cover off, rebricaring the seal, and reassembling. I...

How much water do you lose per week?

Here's a better look. No water in the backwash window now, but if I open the little backwash relief spicket, water water water. I don't think that pipe is under pressure as the backwash goes to waste when the spicket is closed. Any ideas?

How much water do you lose per week?

Well, I think 4" per week in north TX is a leak, friends. The bucket test indicated that over 3 days I was about an inch down in the bucket and over 2 inches down in the pool. See pic - I noticed today that I had water moving through that little backwash "window" while the pool was in normal...

How much water do you lose per week?

Good grief. Well, I don't feel so bad I suppose. I will try the bucket test indicated by another member though, as that is a smart and inexpensive way to monitor the situation.

How much water do you lose per week?

This has always kept me up at night. I've never had a pool before this one, so I did not or do not have a great frame of reference. I'm in the Dallas area - hot sunny summers, fairly windy - with a pool that faces west. LOTS of sun. Water gets very warm. I feel like I'm losing 2" of water per...

Rebounding from a "drain free acid wash."

So to be clear, I shouldn't ADD acid and chlorine at the same time, but it's not a waste to add chlorine to an already-highly-acidic environment, yes?

Rebounding from a "drain free acid wash."

Had a new pebble finish put in last week and after filling there was a big "streak" of discoloration in the pool caused by (I assume) inadequate exposure of the aggregate on the sides of this streak. Rather than drain the pool, PB put 8 gallons of acid in over two days to "cook" the finish down...

    Possible upgrade

The difference between a variable speed pump and single speed really is remarkable. Our situations are different as we don't close in TX, but my electric bill in the winter (primarily pool pump and lights/tech, no heat) was under $40 consistently. That's running the pump for 2hrs at a "high"...

    Replacing lights when resurfacing?

I've had several quotes to resurface my pool, and it's looking like I'll give my business to a nice local company who has a very competitive price on a nice pebble product. My question is - this is the ONLY guy telling me that I should replace my lights. Even with the cost of the lights he's...

Hello new member with intro and questions

Money is always a consideration, but going to a variable speed pump is almost always worth it as long as you can afford the initial investment. With water that old and stagnant, have you considered draining it? You might find that the interior finish is ruined and want to resurface anyway...

    funny puck story

It's a lot like golf. You can go spend $500 on a new driver and play terribly. Or, you can be properly informed, and spend considerably less to do better (or at least not worse.) But don't try to convince the guy who has already spent his money that there's a better way. With what he's paying...

    Slamming process

Here you go: Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain From the link: SLAMing an outdoor pool is most effective when CYA is around 30 to 40. Below 30 you lose too much chlorine to sunlight.
