Granular chlorine after closing - safe on concrete?

I have a concrete pool. Is it safe to add granular chlorine (70% cal-hypo) after it's been closed and is it a must that I circulate the water with a sub. pump? This year I closed early and I want to top up my FC ahead of winter but don't want to keep a partial jug of liquid chlorine in the...

    pool spa combo closing question

I have a concrete pool with attached spa. The spa is not raised, has jets and a drain. Pool and spa are separated by an opening at water level, I have a single skimmer for everything. No automation controls. I close this way, with the spa first: Drain pool below the jets, which also brings...

    Calcium chloride

I bought the purest I could find and it works great. Raised CH without affecting other variables and the water seems perfect.

    testing and balancing your Water

I wish I could find it but someone last year posted to the effect that the only purpose of the R-0870 powder is to turn the sample pink (assuming FC is present). Meaning, if one scoop turns the water pink then that's all that's needed. This has saved me time and $ as I too test often.

Will rubber expansion plugs damage threaded fittings?

Thanks, gonna try air locking again. Not confident I seated the plug in the threads. I hope I'm making the right decision, but I haven't read any other threads complaining that these plugs routinely pop out.

Will rubber expansion plugs damage threaded fittings?

Catanzaro, here is the long version. I have a mesh safety cover and yes we've had a lot of rain lately. Photos: https://imgur.com/a/zu6jYyg Photo 1 – pool view with connected spa Photo 2 – tiled skimmer on left, pool drain in deep end Photo 3 – Skimmer basket. Pipe closest to pool connects...

Will rubber expansion plugs damage threaded fittings?

Thanks Pool_Medic, I'm unaware of any threaded blow-thru valves compatible with a compressor. I want to air-lock if possible.

Will rubber expansion plugs damage threaded fittings?

I closed my pool about 4 weeks ago trying the air-lock method. I used a blow-through expansion valve in my skimmer. Pretty sure I was successful as I heard / saw nothing that would indicate a leaky seal. Today I decided to check the skimmer and it was full of water - the expansion plug had...

    Wham Bam Thank You SLAM

THANK YOU to all mods and members who answer so many questions every day - including mine - and helped me take control of my pool. Just finished my first SLAM and am shocked by the great results (pun intended). FC: 28 CC: 0 CYA: 60 PH: 7.5 TA: 110 CH: 220 This 40-year old pool has never been...

How colorless is colorless for K-2006C chlorine tests?

Thank you very much - I used the 10ml sample and I got much clearer readings.

How colorless is colorless for K-2006C chlorine tests?

I'm using the 25 ml sample. Maybe I can switch to the 10 ml instead. I didn't see an explanation of why you'd use one over the other. The pink tint is so faint you have to stare at the sample for several seconds to see it's not clear. I guess I need true colorless. I was expecting these...

How colorless is colorless for K-2006C chlorine tests?

I'm SLAMmin' using the Taylor K-2006C for the first time. Basically my question is, how colorless does the water need to be to complete the FC and CC tests? During the FC test the water turns clear for a few seconds after adding around 30 drops but turns near-transparent pink again. When I...

I can't unscrew my eyeball return

All my jets use an eyeball wrench either on the outer collar or the inner threaded piece under the eyeball, so I assumed you have the same. No damage to the wrench (a $5 plastic piece) or the jet return parts. My pool is old, the couplings tend to seize, so a screwdriver or small rod gives...

I can't unscrew my eyeball return

Assuming you're talking about the threaded part of the fitting being stuck, I had this problem. I drilled a hole through the sides of my eyeball wrench so I could push a screwdriver through. This let me turn it like a tire wrench and it did the trick easily.

    Mixed bag of closing questions

Thank you, I plan to close more or less as the pool company did. I'm a bit concerned about the main drain line but I will shop-vac and then use foam rope to be safe. I have a Taylor test kit on order, just need to pick it up at the border one of these days. I know I need one if I want the...

staying on top of the leafe problem at closing/ winterizing heater

I can sympathize. I have an inground pool and I've been using a leaf skimmer like this one to get them off the bottom. Very time consuming and annoying but at least it's been effective getting the bigger leaves out so I can just vacuum the remaining small debris at closing (which I plan for...

    Mixed bag of closing questions

I'm getting ready for my first closing, there are a few things I'm unsure of: I believe my pool is marbelite, have heard this surface is meant to remain submerged. Do I need to raise the water level after closing or will safety cover run-off handle this over the closure period? Previous...

Need new Motor and/or Pump. Variable?

JaKoe, it's totally overwhelming I agree. I have to hold back from asking things that have been answered partially in other threads just to get a boiled-down definitive answer. But that's also what makes this place great - unbiased answers for seemingly everything. I have no regrets choosing...

Need new Motor and/or Pump. Variable?

I am a recent convert from single to variable, mostly due to a rebate. Mine (see my sig) has a built-in timer and presets which I like for time-of day-energy consumption, my old did not. I have a pool vac that ran great on my single speed, it took a lot of finagling to find a good RPM on the...

Hard to believe but apparently I need to ask how to correctly use a skimmer sock

Can someone please explain how they have successfully used a skimmer sock? My experience so far has not been great, there have been many cases of air bubbles coming back into the skimmer and upturning the sock & contents. Can they be used during vacuuming, specifically with an automated vac...

    Auto-vac question using vacuum plate

This is the plate by the way: https://www.amazon.com/Hayward-SPX1080AA-Selector-Replacement-Automatic/dp/B004VTG848. The previous homeowner said this is how he vacuumed. The small round flow valve has been removed - the pool and the plate are old - and the vacuum hose is inserted directly...

    Auto-vac question using vacuum plate

Hi all, just took over a gunite pool which seems rare in my location and hoping to tap into the broader TFP expertise. My IG pool has one skimmer - Hayward SP-1080 series I think. There are two pipes in the bottom of the skimmer - I believe that one pulls from the bottom drain and the other...
