    Opening a Swamp this year.

Things are looking better. I can see the bottom in the shallow end and can almost see it in the deep end. How long should I keep the pool at shock level. I checked my CYA again today and it seems to have gone down a little ~30ppm. I'm holding the FC at 14ppm still. I've brushed the walls...

    Opening a Swamp this year.

So I fought the pool over the weekend. Dropped the pH to 7.2 Thursday afternoon, checked the CYA and it was about 35ppm. Shocked up to FC=14ppm, the green disappeared pretty quickly. By Saturday morning the pool was mostly just grey and cloudy. I'm keeping the FC up around 14ppm until its...

    Opening a Swamp this year.

It's a mesh safety cover, didn't have to pump.

    Opening a Swamp this year.

Took the cover off of my pool last Wednesday. Boy what a mess. The water was down to about 1' ~ 1.5' feet in the shallow end, floating off the bottom in a few places, and a nice shade of green. To top it off we have a Hayward filter and the bolt broke on the clamp seal/spring when I was...

    Deep end cloudy after vacuum

Yeah you're right. I must have had 40 CYA in there from before (it saves my last settings usually). Dang it, I'll have to bring it up to shock tonight and check it in the morning.

    Deep end cloudy after vacuum

Here's my backstory. Wednesday afternoon/evening I had the vacuum in the pool (Hayward suction side) for a few hours to clean up some dirt on the bottom. It was dark when I took out the vacuum and turned off the pool for the night. The next morning when I went out the deep end was cloudy...

    Pool Opened First Test Results

So I added some CYA to the pool on Saturday and seemed to have gotten everything cleared up well. Water is nice and clear (not quite sparkling, but we're getting there). Did another round of tests tonight, here they are. FC=7.5 CC= <0.5 TC=8.0 TA=130 CH=250 CYA=40 (added Saturday so maybe it...

    Pool Opened First Test Results

Vacuumed the bottom tonight, man that was a lot of worms. Probably going to have to clean the filter cartridges tomorrow, pressure is up about 5-psi. Also put more chlorine in based on the calculator to get back up around 13.

    Pool Opened First Test Results

Opened the pool on Tuesday. Have been running the pumps 24 hours/day since then. I brushed the walled yesterday and made a huge mess, but today the water is clearing up and the bottom needs to be vacuumed still. Tonight I ran my first set of tests. Here are the results. FC - 7.5 CC- 0.5...

    Winter Pool Damage

I would loose what I was told a typical amount of water (about a 1/2") a week over the summer. The returns were plugged when the pool was closed. The liner is 8 or 9 years old, I think. I attributed the loss over the summer to the liner's age and evaporation since we live in a pretty breezy...

    Winter Pool Damage

So our snow is starting to melt today, we've had a ton this winter. Apparently at some point in the past few months our pool had some trouble. This morning I was able to finally survey the damage. The loop-loc cover collapsed under the weight of the snow and ice, tearing in several spots and...

I've been advised to replace the water

dalehileman, I believe others are trying to help you identify whether you actually need to drain the entire contents of your pool and risk potentially collapsing walls or, based on accurate test results, if you only need to drain a portion of your pool water to lower a likely high CYA level...

    First Test with TF-100

Pucks are gone. Tested last night FC was around 6ppm when I got home, added about half of a 182oz. 6% bleach container and I was up to 8ppm after about an hour. Didn't have time to test this morning. Will take a look tonight and see what my daily loss is. Running over to Lowe's at lunch...

    First Test with TF-100

No speedstir, yet. I wanted one but didn't have the extra $30. My last pucks are almost dissolved and I will be switching to bleach probably tomorrow or Wednesday. I usually test at night when I get home from work before I turn the pool off and plan to add bleach then. I need to stop by...

    Filter pressure dropping

I'll keep an eye on it. I don't like to obcess about things, but not having a ton of pool experience (little over a month now) I questions things. Thanks.

    Filter pressure dropping

I cleaned my cartridges about a month ago, right after we moved into the house. The pressure once I reinstalled everything was about 17-psi which was higher than I expected it to be after cleaning them. Over the past 4 weeks the pressure on the gauge has been slowly dropping. Last night it...

    First Test with TF-100

The water is very clear. I've had no trouble with cloudiness or anything like that yet. I was most concerned with my CYA level and maintaining the proper FC level. I've been shocking weekly with dichlor per the pool store's direction before I found this site. I didn't get to swim today, but...

    First Test with TF-100

My TF-100 kit came today and I just finished my first round of testing. I think that I did everything correctly, I even did the FC test twice because I wasn't sure of it the first time around. I also picked up some bleach at Walmart if needed. Here are the results, FC - 9ppm (18 drops to...

Yeah I'll probably test in the house and keep the kit inside someplace.

Thanks. I plan on posting my results when I finish testing. I want to have some bleach on hand to add as needed after I finish my testing. I've also downloaded a spreadsheet someone had posted to keep a daily/weekly pool log. I think I'm going to put it on a clipboard in my pool shed.

    Another new guy

So today my TF-100 kit should be arriving and I'm looking forward to testing the pool tonight or tomorrow. I've still got the chlorinator running with pucks and would like to get those out asap. I'm probably going to stop by Walmart and pick up a few jugs of bleach on my way home from work...

Ordered a TF-100 kit yesterday. Curious to do my first "real" set of tests.

The strips go up to 10ppm, but are color incremented (purple) at 1ppm, 3ppm, 5ppm and 10ppm. It gets hard to tell what the reading really is when you get around and above 5ppm. The "ok" range on the strips are 1-3ppm.

Alright thanks for the info. I'm going to order a TF-100 today and will NOT add any baking soda. Regarding the bleach, I'll give the pool calculator a try with my pool store test numbers. That should tell me how much bleach I should be adding? I don't know how to gauge how much to add daily...

Stumbled here following a google search a few days ago, have been reading the site over the weekend. I've read through the pool school once and plan to print it out sometime this week to have in a binder. We bought our house a month ago with a 22,100-gallon unground liner pool. Its my first...
