Best Places to Buy Liquid Chlorine

At least here in St Louis, Menards is doing its frequent 11% rebate thing now, so the net is $4.44 / gallon... plus the cost of a stamp. Bought some yesterday.

    Mysterious connection

Okay, I called the builder: It's a "hydrostatic plug" that just goes into the gravel beneath the pool. The idea is to open it if the pool is drained, to allow groundwater to enter and hopefully prevent floating. Apparently there's another one inside the main drain, too.

    Mysterious connection

We've been *trying* not to do too much takeout, but yeah, we break down for the occasional Imo's pie :)

    Mysterious connection

Well, I don't have a picture that shows what it hooks to, but you can see the stub coming up through the gravel in this shot.

    Mysterious connection

I think I understand everything on the equipment pad; no obvious "other end" to the connection. I can try to send a picture later but it's tricky since it's on the bottom. I'm digging through my old construction photos to see if I have one that shows the plumbing before they shot it. I don't...

moss rock waterfall with salt water pool? Need advice ASAP so can make a decision

One edge of our pool is a wall made of quarried stones joined with mortar. We have a waterfall that washes down a portion of the wall. We've only had the pool for 3 years but have had no signs of major deterioration. In the hottest months we can see a little bit of mildew on the rocks at the...

    Mysterious connection

There's an inlet or outlet in my pool whose function is a mystery to me. It's smack in the middle of the bottom of the pool, right where the shallow part starts to slope down into the deep end. It looks to be about 1.5" in diameter and is closed with a threaded PVC cap. It's pretty much flush...

    Anyone opening early?

Opening today, here in St. Louis. I was scheduled to open in about 3 weeks, hopefully missing most of the catkins and pollens. But... St. Louis has a stay-at-home order. The hospital where my wife and I are doctors is requiring us to stay within 50 miles of the hospital. My wife (a...

Priming a pump above the pool

Well, I sure did have a suction leak the first time, when I left the O-ring off of the pump basket cover. :) Otherwise, no, I don't see bubbles I don't, but that makes sense as a place to look. I understand that this is a vague question, but how long is too long for a pump to run dry while...

Priming a pump above the pool

I have a pool company open and close my pool, so I don't have direct experience with that process. Recently I came back from a trip to find my system gunked up with pollen, catkins, and stuff. In the process of de-gunking, my system lost its prime. Getting things restarted was *really* hard...

    What's your current pool temp?

58 degrees... but increasing at about a degree per hour. Yes, the weather will be lousy again by the end of the week. Yes, the oak pollen will make a yellow sargasso sea before the end of the month. Yes, the roar of the heater is the sound of my wallet getting lighter. Don't care. Going to be...

Bulk liquid chlorine in St. Louis?

Thank you--I will try Sunset Aquatech. Menards is where I've been buying stuff for the past couple of seasons, especially the BOGO sale. I agree it's a great value. I'm just trying to avoid generating so many empty plastic jugs. (For these purposes, I will conveniently ignore the obvious...

Bulk liquid chlorine in St. Louis?

I probably throw away 60-80 gallon bleach jugs per season. Anybody know of any source in St. Louis for buying bulk bleach into carboys or other refillable containers? Thank you!

    Shower

No idea if your pool area is too formal for this to work, but: My grandmother's beach house had a "shower" for rinsing off sand. It consisted of a shower head and a riser with a valve, but the bottom end was just a hose connector. So the shower could be attached to a hose from a nearby hose...

    Building a small pool

You can also search on "cocktail pool", which is a sort of synonym for small, social pools.

To planter, or not to planter...that is the question

Another "no" vote. In addition to the issue with debris, people sitting on those sunken benches will have the planter wall at eye level on two sides, and will be pretty cut off visually from the pool deck. Plus you can't put an arm on the pool edge while sitting there.

Reasons to drain high water level?

We just got some rain, and my water level is a bit over the top of my skimmers. Between a waterfall and sunlight, evaporation will take the level down in a couple of days. Other than the skimmers not skimming, is there a reason to lower the water level in the mean time? Thanks!

Hate my pool area.. looking for advice

Just curious, nothing more: Why do you need that fence around the pool if the whole thing is enclosed? Is that common?

A surprise epilogue to my build

Yeah, I suppose the septic system did more-or-less work from last June until the rains this spring. At that point we started having a persistently soggy yard that in hindsight was clearly due to this problem. Sort of amazing that it worked as well as it did. The tree sculpture is a DNA...

A surprise epilogue to my build

We finished pool construction last year right around Memorial Day, and we enjoyed our pool all last summer. The backyard mud-pit was a distant memory. But oddly enough, a funny issue with the construction popped up last month. It's all fixed now, but it makes a good story: We have a big...

Pump for maintenance while pool is closed?

My pool opened clean this year, happily enough. Over last winter, I had a pool guy come out, test, and add chlorine a couple of times. However, I'd prefer to be doing this myself. When he added chlorine, he dangled some sort of a pump into the pool for an hour to circulate the chemicals. Any...

Cold water out of returns with heater on???

I built my pool last season, so this was my first time opening it "cold". If it's any comfort to you, I had exactly the same doubt that you did. It's just a combination of high flows through the heater and unusually cold water entering the heater.

    2018 Bleach Prices

I just bought 48 gallons of the 12.5% at the Menards sale: Regular $3.99, buy-one-get-one. The trick for me is that this isn't advertised at all in the store. It's entirely on-line at menards.com. I had to complete the sale on line and click "pick up in store". Worked fine, though.

    Hot tub recommendations

St Louis has a local manufacturer called Aspen Spas. We've had very good luck with them. Bought one in 2002, and it did fine, with occasional service, until we moved last year. Bought a new one from them for the new house. They're carried by dealers, mostly in the upper Midwest. If you...

Best Places to Buy Liquid Chlorine

Menards--at least the one in St. Louis--has an exceedingly good sale right now. 128 oz of 12.5% for $1.77. (And the date code was mid-June.) I bought 48 gallons and they didn't bat an eye.
