Pump for maintenance while pool is closed?

My pool opened clean this year, happily enough. Over last winter, I had a pool guy come out, test, and add chlorine a couple of times. However, I'd prefer to be doing this myself.

When he added chlorine, he dangled some sort of a pump into the pool for an hour to circulate the chemicals. Any suggestions on what sort of a pump is suitable? Or is one necessary? Or how else does one get chemicals to mix when the pool is closed?

Thanks...
