Moved from FL to MN and have a pool here!

Hi folks, Well, after being in FL for some time, we returned to the midwest and I have an inground pool here in MN. I'm in the Twin Cities area. Any other people in this area on the forums? I'm going to have to learn a lot about what to do with pools that have to be shut down and started up...

Successful SLAM (I think) but still algae

It turned out well. I've been keeping my FC on the high side around 6 and it was great until today I noticed something when I brushed. My FC is 6.2 and CC was .2. water very clear. So I'm starting to suspect it may just be dirt or pollen after large rains. It looks greenish but it isn't in...

Successful SLAM (I think) but still algae

Thanks. I vacuumed and brushed and did the filter and yes, I'm going to do the OCLT tomorrow if the stuff remains.

Successful SLAM (I think) but still algae

Hi Pat. Our pollen season is over so that's not it. Funny, during peak pollen when my whole deck and everything is yellow, the pool seems to filter it fine. I just have to clean the filter more. We have had a few big rains. Could it be some fine material that isn't algae? It's definitely...

Successful SLAM (I think) but still algae

Hi all, I've done a few SLAMs over the years and always had success, but this time seems to be different. I went through the process and it seemed successful. I have a pebble finish concrete pool 14,000 gallon. My CYA is 30 so I put the SLAM level to 12 and kept it there until it met the...

pool cage screen door hinge replacment - having trouble with finding right rivets and other issues

Hi all, when my pool was remodeled my pool cage door hinges broke. They snapped vertically behind the rivet. The remodeler said he'd fix but can't ever seem to get a crew out, and I called some screen repair folks and they are all too busy to do a small job. So I ventured to do it myself. The...

any change to maintenance and testing routine with wet edge vs plaster?

I do have that brush and just bought a replacement after 5 years with the first one. It is great. I also bought a protuff pole - what a difference. It has locking extension vs compression fitting, and even at full 16' extension does not bend. I finished the 28 days and the finish looks great.

any change to maintenance and testing routine with wet edge vs plaster?

Thank you very much. I did find the startup guide and I'm going to talk with my remodeler about support. So far, all they've talked about is getting the pool filled and chemicals done - no mention of post-support. Which I'm fine doing myself but will still ask. I'm going to ask about that...

any change to maintenance and testing routine with wet edge vs plaster?

Hi everyone, my pool is nearing completion of its remodeling. I have a 14K gallon gunite pool, (chlorine, not SWG) and for the remodel we went with wet edge. The way I maintained the pool to-date was as follows: - I ran a Kreepy Krauly sand shark most of the time with skimmer/shark on and...

Tricky orange algae problem - FC and CC look good

Thanks guys. I think it was a 1st time SLAM mistake. I did add to the correct shock level, but then just tested the next day and thought since FC was in a “good range” and CC was zero, I fixed it. So it looks Like I need to get the FC to 16 and keep it there until the 3 conditions are met...

Tricky orange algae problem - FC and CC look good

Hello all, it’s been awhile. I hope everyone is doing well. I have been maintaining my pool for over 4years and this is the first time I’ve had to deal with what I think is orangish colored algae. It showed up as a few patches on the stairs and sides. I brushed them off and tested the water...

Is this from adding baking soda or could this be something else?

LOL - I appreciate the comments. My pool is covered with a screened cage, so no bird. No kids around. Plus, this was NOT in the skimmer basket, it was in the sealed pump basket. So it would have had to be sucked up by my sandshark and I'd think that would pulverize anything. I think its some...

Is this from adding baking soda or could this be something else?

You know, I'd give that a try but unfortunately, I took pics of it then threw it out a few days so. So far haven't seen another. I wonder if it could be some organic material?

Is this from adding baking soda or could this be something else?

It has really no smell at all. When I smush it between my fingers, it's a smooth feel, not a paste but like a very fine compound. Hard to describe because there's not any perceptible grit to it. Very bizarre.

Is this from adding baking soda or could this be something else?

Hi all, I found this sort of "cookie" like puck in the pool pump filter basket (the one just before the pump. It was in one piece about the size of a sandwich cookie. It has a smooth consistency, broke up pretty easy, and isn't real gritty. I'm wondering if this is baking soda that for some...

anyone have issues with Taylor Speedstir not working properly?

Hi everyone, I've had the Taylor speedstir for a couple years and love it. But recently, it started not working right. The "pill" normally spins quickly and creates a nice mix. Now it just kind of jiggles which doesn't mix much at all. It spins when I first push the button but then it stops...

Observations on my pools CYA changes and using test kit standard to confirm reading

Yes Kim I hear you. This year the rain hasn't been as crazy as years past. I only had one event that caused me to drain a bit off. I'm glad too to have the room as I like using the pucks when I am gone for a few days. Needsajet - that is some heady stuff. Your takeaways are great. Thanks.

Observations on my pools CYA changes and using test kit standard to confirm reading

Hey all. I started doing the TFP method back in November. Prior, the pool was maintained weekly by a service. Trichlor pucks were used then and when I started, the CYA was well over 100. Via Taylor kit and 1/2 dilution, the best I could estimate was130-150. Since I was not going to use the...

    CYA dropped to below 30

I was going to start another thread on CYA going down as mine has as well to even a larger extent but I've been trying to research all the threads out there first to not be redundant. It does seem to go down despite no obvious reason like draining or excessive rain.

"lighter" colored or blue stains in gunite pool trying to determine cause

Re: "lighter" colored or blue stains in gunite pool trying to determine cause Thanks for the advice! I do want to clarify, however, that the dark color is the actual pool finish color. the lighter, or more "blue" is the issue - either stain, or variation in color - that is what to be...

"lighter" colored or blue stains in gunite pool trying to determine cause

Hi all. These "stains" for lack of a better word have been present since I bought the house two years ago so I'm not sure how long they have been there. Here is the situation: my pool's plaster finish is a sand/tan color and so in the shallow end the water reflects little blue color but of...

quick question on swimming after adding chemicals

Thanks JVTrain for the info on TA - my TA had gotten to 70 and I thought I was supposed to keep it higher so got it back up to 90. At 80 right now. Hi Flbeachluvr - nice to hear from a neighbor here as well. Cheers!

quick question on swimming after adding chemicals

Thanks everyone for the feedback - and the humor. :) On the PH question, my PH does seem to rise slowly and consistently (my pool is 10 years old). But it doesn't swing a lot. Have to add a little acid once a week, sometimes twice.

chips on edge of plaster steps

on two of my entry steps, I have a small chip on the edge. They are about finger tip size and are through the plaster so the chips look dark. Will such chips continue to degrade and thus grow if not repaired? And is repair a simple DIY effort? Thanks.
