    Helping a Friend

My buddy just aquired a liner Salt Water Pool with a Cartridge filtration system. I used my TFP testkit to get the following numbers: FC- 3.5 CC- 2.0 TA- 110 CH- 225 CYA- 30 PH - within tolerance Water is overall pretty clear but he appears to have some black algae growing on the steps. Using...

First time replacing Hayward Super Pump Motor

Hey all, with how loud my current pool motor is, I have decided to replace it after 4 years. I could have removed and attempted to repair it, but I found a replacement motor for $210.00 (Pool Store selling same motor for $360.00 btw) so that seemed like fairly reasonable fix. My one question...

Hayward Suuper Pump dead after four seasons

Hey all, so this pump let me down after just four seasons in the Northeast. Powered it on Saturday and heard just the hum, no water pump. Tried it twice more and now not even a hum, completely dead. I have my electrician coming over to double check the electric, but assuming it is the motor...

    Time for a new pump?

Only start of fourth year for my pump, shouldn’t these typically last longer? Any suggestions on a fix before I call in a repair man? It’s a heyward, out of warranty. The pressure keeps popping between zero and 5, not moving very much water. Any suggestions on a do it yourself fix?

Suggestions on adding Ant-freeze to flat laying pipes

Anyone have a suggestion on how I can get some anti freeze into this return line? It lays flat and has a 90 degree angle, I tried a tube hooked to a funnel, but the tube would not make the angle. Tried blowing it thru with a shop vac and that just made a mess, I might have gotten some in, but...

    Advice on Blowing my lines

Hello all, I am wondering if you can give me some advice on the proper way to blow my lines. I am new to the closing process but want to learn to do it myself as it is getting expensive. As you can see in the picture the circle at the bottom right is my saltwater cell which will be unhooked in...

    Helping out my brother...

Morning all, helping my brother balance his water in a pool that was not opened at all last year. Water is very cloudly, about 2 feet of visibility. It is an inground pool, probably around 20,000 gallons. After failing to follow my SLAM schedule for 7 days and therefore seeing no results, he...

    Sock Method

I explained the sock method to a friend and then he went to the pool store and they told him to make slurry and add to his skimmer, can someone share the link with the explanation as to why we use the sock method? Thanks.

    Balancing Advice

This is my first season as a Pool owner. I am working hard at learning the art of the balance and while I feel like I am making headway, I still am sometimes baffled the way some of my levels are changing. For example, TA; I had it tested twice at the pool store and tested it twice myself...

Simple Question - Also CYA Testing

I know you are not supposed to dump tested water back into the pool, but is it safe to dump tested water down the sink? I know it seems like a silly question, but no idea if any of these reagents may be corrosive to plumbing. Also, looking for some advice on technique for testing CYA. I know...

Running my Heat Pump when pool first opened

Hello all and Happy Pool Season! When my pool was opened, the tech told me to go ahead and run the heater. When I went to the Pool Store to get advice on testing my water, they mentioned that maybe I should not be running the heat pump depending on the "alkalinity" I believe? Should I not be...

SWG on same switch as Filter

Hello, the way my pool was set up, the electrician and pool company put the SWG and Filter Pump on the same switch. Should these two always run in conjunction with one another?

Liner Float / Drainage / Backfill

Hello all, just had the pool company come out today to position the layout for us. We are not in a flood zone, we do have a flat yard where the pool will be going with a 4-6 foot pitched grade in the back, about 20 feet behind the pool. The installer mentioned we may want to back-fill with...

    Liner over steel stair construction

Hello, My pool installation is going to start in about 2 weeks. Just nailing down the final details. I have the option of going Liner over Steel steps into the pool for an extra 2 K. While the look is great, I have been told already that the first step can be problematic due to wear and...

    Electric versus Gas Heaters

Most of the installers I talk to seem to recommend Electric Heaters. The one I am looking at is a 110,000 BTU Hayward Pro Series. Installer swears it is powerful enough for a 21,000 gallon pool. Should I be concerned? The gas heater option is 1000 less and 250,000 BTU's plus the cost to run...

Advice and Opinions on Depth and Stamped Concrete

Hello everyone, father of 2 young children and putting in my first pool, I am looking for opinions on depth and concrete. I was considering doing a straight pitch from start to end going 3.5' to 5.5'. I don't want a deep end, will never have a diving board. Other option is flat 3.5' then pitch...
