Can’t get FC levels to maintain

Your guests can swim at up to slam level chlorine, and as long as you can see the bottom. If your just not comfortable with that, I would still keep it elevated at least 10 - 15 ppm till you are ready to slam. Algecide helps to prevent algae starting in the first place, it doesn't kill it once...

    First use of TF-100 Kit

On all tests, you keep going with drops until there is no further color change. Don't count the final drop that made no change. If calcium turned blue on drop 16, and not 17, you multiply 16 x 25 for 400 calcium.

I need advice on what to "attack" first ...

As long as chlorine is not over slam level for your CYA, and you can see the bottom of the pool (for safety) you can swim.

Cloudy water, but none of the usual suspects?

Well you can rule out algae pretty definitively by doing an overnight chlorine loss test. I would start there to rule it out.

Thought I had MA turns out to be just dirt?

Just wanted to mention...... What works for me with photos: take a screen shot of the photo you want to upload, upload the screenshot instead. Not sure why it works, but you don't have to resize that way.

PH keeps dropping what to do?

That is when you can use your pucks, keeping in mind how much CYA they will add. Use pool math effects of adding to figure that.

For real, what's going on with my chlorine level?

+1 on the sample sizer, like the speed stir, once you have it you wonder why you ever did without. Wish they had one for the PH block!

Not satisfied with Dolphins I've tried

Hmmmm, my nautilus cc plus cleans my stairs and deep end bench. It may get hung for a minute or two, but always breaks loose pretty quickly. It doesn't kick anything up, but then the pool stays pretty darn clear with tfp.

Is it really necessary to brush the pool?

This is my 5th summer with my pool. The only time I brush is after adding chemicals, and then only where they might pool. Knock on wood never had algae, so no biofilm to disturb. I do have a rosie the robot, so maybe her brushing is saving me.

    60% algaecide

I order refill chems, in larger quantities than tftestkits sells, from Amazon all the time, I have never gotten expired chemicals.

    Water chemistry - need help!

Try one of these ultra fine mesh bags, they get everything including the tiniest bugs and pollen.

    White crystals in robot basket.

Thanks, I did raise alkalinity for over winter to keep my csi in line. My fill water, is low, around 50, so I was just going to let it drop naturally, but I'll acid and aerate instead. Appreciate your input.

    White crystals in robot basket.

I should have taken a pic, but didn't think to at the time. It looks sort of like dried salt, but my salt is not high, or recently added. I can't think what it might be. My calcium is always low, fill water only has 20 ppm, it has already dropped from my calcium add earlier this spring. Can...

Pool turn up and looking for suggestions on numbers.

The chlorine should have a julian date on it, check that to see how old your bleach is. Fresher is better, of course. Check your chlorine 30 mins. After you add to see if it gave you the amount you anticipate.

Just got TF-100 Kit and here are my results. Please advise on what i need to add/do to change my levels

We don't get a discount for sewer here, the reason I was given? "Eventually it will end up in the sewer when you drain it." Hmmmm, haven't drained any yet, and don't anticipate the need. Water company doesn't care though.

    Bad DPD Powder?

Whenever I have powder that turns purple, it turns the water sample a dark purple and won't clear completely, so I just get new.

Lowes is rolling out a crappy new bleach

I saw that Moxie stuff at Lowes here 2 months ago, wouldn't buy it cause I couldn't figure out percentage. They usually have pool essentials here.

Polar plunge party or heat my pool?

After a surprise $700.00 addition to the gas bill the first September I had a pool, I now only heat when I know I am going to be swimming the next day. I heat it day before and day of. We may swim once or twice a week this time of year, so it maybe $200.00 in additional gas charges. We think its...

Lots of tiny particles floating on top of pool...normal?

Hey Hawkeyes. It gets extreme in GA as well. Get on Amazon and find a "pollen bag" for your pole. These bags get everything, pollen dust, gnats. Yes, you still have to do the work, but I'd rather that, than swim in it. I also turn my pump up to 2450 before I swim to help skim a lot of that away.

Am I on the right path? New pool owner - inherited a beast?

For your testing questions regarding color change: colors are not always what is described here. TA will definitely turn from green to a very bright barbie pink, before that happens it will flash red, then turn red, but that will not be the end, the hot pink will Chlorine: can sometimes turn...

    Smart stir

+1 for a speed stir smart stir, any stirrer besides me. I just ordered a second in case something happens to my o.g. cause I would be lost without it.

    Algae Help!

You've been given great links that will help with your testing as well as understanding the cya/chlorine relationship. I was confused about the colors on the tests as well. On the calcium test, as Texas told you, it will be a barely tinged pinky/purple color, the final color will be baby blue...

    combined chlorine

And those may sound like snappy replies to you, they are not. Pool stores exist to make money, if they mess your pool up, why they can sell you the fix! A great business model for them, for you, not so much. Putting up a sign that says "best pool store ever" does not make it so. No one will...

If most who report on this section of the forum are (assumedly) chlorine users, why so many algae issues?

I'm sure too, there are lots of TFP 'ers like me. I learned about it while my pool was being built, I read TFP pretty regular (embarrassingly so) I've yet to have algae in 4 seasons. When my swg went wonky a few weeks ago I almost panicked, but just turned Into to a "jug lugger" instead while I...
