Can’t get FC levels to maintain

After a week long SLAM..completed successfully. water looked great, temp was hovering around 77-80. Air temp solid 85. Went away for the weekend, and upon doing tests…everything was normal except FC.
Shocked with 52 percent cal hypo. ( CYA @ 40). No FC. Ran out of CYA reagent and had to wait a couple days for it to be delivered from Amazon. Test showed below30, so I assumed it was zero and added cya to bring it up to 50….but apparently my CYA is at 70.

So, should I add water and get CYA down to 50, then add chlorine to match, per chart? Or should I add enough chlorine to match 70? Won’t the high CYA level counteract the chlorine I put in?

I will also add that for the last week we have had record daytime temps 99 with heat index over 100. Water yesterday and today hovering at 90.
Water is clear but a tiny bit murky.
HELP PLEASE…and Thank you in advance.

U can do the SLAM Process with 70ppm cya - follow the FC/CYA Levels & target 28ppm.
It just takes a bit more chlorine initially to get there but not impossible. Hopefully it won’t be a long one as it hasn’t gotten bad. It’s also possible that u ended your previous slam a little too soon. Check hidden areas like ladder/steps - they are algae condos!
Be sure to pass ALL 3 end of slam criteria before letting fc fall to normal levels.
Maybe even go an extra day after meeting the exit criteria this time.

Thanks for the info, I was thinking the same. However, I won't be able to start slam until Tuesday, as we have out of town guests. who
are using the pool. Until then, should I add chlorine every evening, and hope for the best?

FC 0.5
CC 1ppm
pH 7.0 ( aeration due to high temps)
ALK 60.

In the past I have used 2 oz of algeacide weekly. I have only done this once this summer. Until SLAM should I try this?
Or just add chlorine, and keep adding.. I know it's wasteful, but I want the water as safe as I can get it until I SLAM.

Your guests can swim at up to slam level chlorine, and as long as you can see the bottom. If your just not comfortable with that, I would still keep it elevated at least 10 - 15 ppm till you are ready to slam. Algecide helps to prevent algae starting in the first place, it doesn't kill it once you have it, chlorine does that.

Thanks for the quick response! Info good to know. 🙂

Person to person transmission of nasties is a real threat when fc dips below minimum for your cya because algae is eating it all at a quick pace.
You don’t want your guests going home with conjunctivitis & ear infections or worse.
I would swim @ slam fc level any day (& have many times) before I would stick my toe in an under chlorinated pool.
Be certain fc stays above minimum for your cya whilst u have swimmers & that the water is clear enough to see the bottom for safety.
There’s no time like the present- raise to slam every chance u are able - the fc will be consumed by the algae & the sun in short order. Then u can really hit it hard & frequent when they’re gone. The sooner u begin, the sooner it will clear.
