Not satisfied with Dolphins I've tried

I'm very new to this. Originally I really didn't want to spend $2500 cdn on a cleaner knowing that it'll last maybe 5-7 years only. First I tried the Nautilus CC plus, but I found that it moved too fast and was kicking up a lot of debris and making my pool cloudy after its run its course. I only used the fine filter that it came with. I didn't try the ultra fine, so I'm not sure that'll make a big difference.

Next I tried the S400 (rental from the store) even though it's $2k for me. But I find that the direction it takes in the pool makes no sense and it consistently left spots uncleaned that the Nautilus CC Plus did not. Is this due perhaps this unit being a rental? It did a better job with picking up fine debris and it moved slow enough not to kick up too much stuff. It also didn't terrible on the stairs, actually didn't attempt it at all, which I suppose is expected of most of these robotic vacuums. I thought the Nautilus CC Plus did a better job and going everywhere.

I am not sure what else I can try. Is the M600 or E70 much smarter in the path they take? Really reluctant to spend the amount of money these two machines costs tho. Maybe stick to S400 and simply use manual mode for those spots missed.

I considered some Polaris but I keep reading bad things and most people recommend the Dolphin line.

Any recommendations? I have a 16x40 ft concrete pool with some stairs.

How do you guys clean the stairs if the robots won't do it? Manual, non-robotic vacuums?

I take a brush and sweep whatever is on the stairs and sun shelf into the pool and let the robot pick it up.

Its weird that the S400 misses spots. That is not one of the complaints we have heard.

Makes sense to just sweep. I should have thought of that haha. The spots it missed were on a sort of ledge thing, but the Nautilus was able to sweep the area. So not sure why the s400 couldn't. It also sometimes spins on an axis.

They all move in random patterns & sometimes do wheelies & such - none are very “smart” in that way, they can’t see the dirt. Some have longer cycles (3hrs vs 2hrs) so that can make a difference as well. The remedy is running a longer cycle or two cycles in a row if things are missed.
Debris that “ poofs” can be algae- no robot will overcome an algae problem as it’s a chemistry problem not a mechanical one.

Hmmmm, my nautilus cc plus cleans my stairs and deep end bench. It may get hung for a minute or two, but always breaks loose pretty quickly. It doesn't kick anything up, but then the pool stays pretty darn clear with tfp.
