    Worms in the Pool

Now that we have cooler nights, we start getting worms in the pool. They are small black worms, about 2 inches long (not earthworms). We have a cover and they all come into the pool at the end of the cover where the cover closes and there is a small gap, very small, between where the pool wall...

Is Pentair IntelliFlo VSF a waste for a 16 X 37 pool with no extra water features

The more expensive your electricity per KWH, the more it's worth it, for that reason and many others. And, get the SWCG, it will make your pool life easier!

    Standard vs. Variable speed pump

Pentair itself has a good video on it, but basically, this isn't a linear relationship. It doesn't take twice as much power to produce twice as much pumping power. It takes multiples of that so it's more of a geometric curve where the electricity needed at a higher power level increase faster...

    Standard vs. Variable speed pump

I'm in MN and we drain our Intellifo (remove drain plugs) in the fall, no issues leaving it out all winter.

    Standard vs. Variable speed pump

My combination of the IC40 and the Intelliflo has made my pool maintenance a breeze! I run the pump 24 hours a day at the lowest possible speed to keep the chlorinator working - usually about 1200 RPMs. The pool has been perfect all summer long given the constant stream of chlorine (usual...

    Where to get muriatic acid?

I bought this summer's supply at Lowes. Four gallons and still have 1.5 left! Whatever strength it is, it works perfectly according to the addition chart in the Taylor kit pamphlet. I add what they say and my ph adjusts to what I want it to be. (managing ph has been easier this summer for some...

    Chlorine vs SWG

Go for it! It makes it extremely easy to manage the pool. Yes, ph does go up, but that easily managed by adding a quart or so of muriatic acid every week or two. I run the SWG on 20% and can almost ignore the pool after that. Test it every few days for chlorine, and every week or so for ph and...

Air in pump basket - low rpms

I will add that I always seem to have a little air in the pump basket when I run it on really low RPMs (<1500) and they always go away when I increase the RPMs. I haven't worried about it since no air is coming out of the return jets and it hasn't been a problem.

Keep Heater Running Over Night or Restart Each Day?

Basic question - which is more efficient? Running the heater continuously or reheat each day? I do have an autocover to help preserve the heat, but I am in MN. I need the pool warmed up (now at 77, probably will be 75 or 76 tomorrow - Thursday- morning) for a Friday afternoon party. The next...

    Disposing of Filter Cleaning Water

It was too heavy to move to the storm drain so, it occurred to me while I was finishing up, to drop the pool cover pump into the bin. So I ran the hose from the pool cover pump to the non-grassy area under the playset. Didn't have to move the heavy bin of water and it emptied completely in less...

    Disposing of Filter Cleaning Water

I am using dishwasher detergent and water to soak my filters and now I am wondering how I dispose of 25 gallons of the dishwashing detergent cleaning water after the filters have finished soaking. Any suggestions?

Pool bid. Please pick it apart TFP!!

A SWCG combined with the chemistry management techniques on this forum, have made it extremely easy for me to manage my pool. I do so little to it, I'm wondering if I am missing something. The water quality , however, almost always checks out great. I'm sure having an autocover makes a big...

    Water Temperature Feel vs Actual

Dew point was also my thought. It makes all the difference in the feel of the air and a higher dew point just makes it more comfortable while in the pool, I think. Low dew points - 50's and less, will make the air feel really cool on any wet, exposed skin.

Thanks! The link to Coverstar was perfect.

Water level tho close the pool with an automatic cover

The cover track is inside the pool. It seems that the pool builder recommended we lower the water just enough (just below the skimmers?) to still carry the weight of the cover, even after freezing.

    Water Temperature Feel vs Actual

We use our heater to read the pool water temperature and what's interesting to us, is the same water temperature (reading per the heater screen) can feel so much different. For example, yesterday, it read 83 degrees when we started swimming and it felt perfect and we did not use the heater at...

Water level tho close the pool with an automatic cover

I have read several/many posts about closing a pool using a winter cover and lowering the water below the returns. However, I have an automatic covers and need to maintain a certain level to ensure the cover is supported. What water level would you adjust to when covering with an auto cover for...

The concept of closing an in ground swimming pool

Re: The concept of closing an inground swimming pool Is it necessary to lower the water below the skimmers and/or the returns? It definitely gets well below freezing here!

    Should I Worry about TA?

I will give the aeration method a try. As long as it's been stable, it's probably a good time to work on tweaking the TA.

    Should I Worry about TA?

In response to splashpad, I don't use, nor have I ever used, any baking soda. My understanding is no need to as my TA has always been in the 200 range.

    Should I Worry about TA?

Here are my latest test results (using my test kit): FC 5 CYA 60 TA 200 CH 250 PH 7.6 TA has always been about 200. The water has been clear all summer - just letting the SWG do it's thing basically, add MA once in while, and the numbers stay pretty consistent. I have read on this forum to not...

How Often Should I Brush/Vacuum the Pool?

Just closing in on one year with the pool and since finding this site, pool maintenance has been easy, and I've had wonderful, clear sparkling pool water all summer. My question is how often I should be brushing/vacuuming the pool? We don't have any trees nearby and we keep it covered when we're...

    Adding Automation

It's true, not many features on our pool, but just the idea of being able to know the temperature of the water, and being able to make heater, pump and SWCG adjustments without having to go out to the far corner of the yard (a whole 80 feet after all!), sounded good. Of course, it all depended...

    Adding Automation

We built our pool last year, all Pentair (SWCG, cartridge filter, pump) except the heater which is a RayPak, and the cover which is Latham(?) I believe. My question is now that it's all installed and we've been using it for a year, is it worth it to install automation? Cost prohibitive now? The...

Budget swg, or best value for the buck

I'm also in MN - lucky to open it in mid-May and hopefully, don't close it until mid-Sept. We have a heater, but it can be really tough for it to keep up when the nights get longer and cooler.

Need new Motor and/or Pump. Variable?

All I can add is I run my VS pump at a very low RPM, 1200, which is high enough to keep the SWCG working, and I have a beautifully clear pool. And, at 1200 RPM it uses only 114 watts per hour. I run it at this speed 24 hours a day to get complete turnover unless we expect a lot of swimmers then...

Free form pool - worth the extra cost ?

We have a rectangular pool - never even considered a free form pool. The biggest question that came up for us was stairs. I was a "no need" and my wife was "yes, we need." Of course, we got stairs right? Anyway, to me it seems that once everyone is in the pool and enjoying it, the shape is...

    IntelliChlor IC40 - not working?

As long as it read "low" salt level it will not produce chlorine is my understanding. Have you checked the Intellichlor for scaling? Has it been some time since it was last cleaned with water and/or muriatic acid? It's odd it seems that your salt level is that high but it reads low salt, and...
