I would think that is perfect. You just want something that will displace or take part of the surface, then as the water freezes what you've but in there will crush first and take the displacement from the moving ice.

With any good luck the water will run back out of the pipes, but it will all depend on the plumbing and how protected they are and if the water has anywhere to expand to as it freezes. It can also depend on if they are higher than your pump, etc. You definitely hope that the rolling outages...

My thoughts are the same as yours because when I open my pump basket lid the incoming air lets the water flow on through the filter and heater returning to the pool and water will also flow backwards to the skimmer and drains if I haven't closed the valves. Someone here in the thread though...

That is the difference between OKC and DFW that I speak of. I have two relatives in the Choctaw area, one winterizes and one doesn't. If my water were to ever be in danger of dropping below 30 my heater is my backup option to see if I couldn't at least keep it from dropping further. Help me...

I keep a couple of gallons, but I add about 1 to 1.5 cups a week to the pool. Some pools need it and some don't. It will just depend upon your usage as to how much you keep.
