Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

Hoping to see more follow up stories with what each did to protect the pool and equipment or what you did that unfortunately didn't protect and how much or what kind of damage you had, it will help us understand what kind of temps we can survive by just keeping the water moving, etc. I feel a...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

I would think that is perfect. You just want something that will displace or take part of the surface, then as the water freezes what you've but in there will crush first and take the displacement from the moving ice.

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

With any good luck the water will run back out of the pipes, but it will all depend on the plumbing and how protected they are and if the water has anywhere to expand to as it freezes. It can also depend on if they are higher than your pump, etc. You definitely hope that the rolling outages...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

That is a good flow and saves the top end of the pump. To be honest, if 3100 doesn't save you, 3450 likely won't either. Best of luck with it. You've likely done all you can until ice were to form, then it is shut it down and pull the plugs.

I believe you noted you have an Easytouch panel (and screen logic is not installed yet) - to change your pump speed from the panel look at this document and page 27 I believe...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

I don't know what is right about lowering water, etc, but if you wanted to, don't you have a way to backwash or pump to waste? You show a recent build, I think code would have required that.

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

Well things change by the hour. I've decided not to wait on what if the water temp keeps dropping. I've turned freeze mode off, moved the valves to circulate both pool and hot tub, turned on the sprays and deck fountain at a low flow and turned on the heater to 75. Nothing will be fun, but...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

I don't know that it is perfect (and I haven't tested) , but I have a frost free faucet that my pool filler is attached too. If not familiar, the frost free faucets turn the water off below ground and the water flows back out of the faucet after you turn it off. My pool filler is connected...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

My spa heats about 1 degree per minute with a 400K BTU heater. When the freeze protection turns back to the pool, there is one return that adds more pool (cold) water to the spa (for the spillover function). I figure it would take a while to completely heat either one, however your point is...

Well, no looking back from here. Have a couple of heavy drop cloths I might add over equipment later, but 25 outside, water temp 38 in Dallas. Pentair freeze protection running 24/7 Pool/Spa. Will see where this takes us over the next 6 days.

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

Since you can see that most of us are most worried about losing power down in the South, my car is my backup plan to loss of power. First if we lose electricity, the pool is what it is, will open drains and be done with it, fix what breaks. Worrying won't help it. However - the car is my...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

What automation do you have? Older Pentair is pretty easy to set up for freeze mode. It will handle moving the flow back and forth between pool and spa about every 30 minutes. It can be set up remotely, you don't have to be at the pad and this would likely be sufficient. If there is no...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

New forecast low for DFW this coming Tuesday of -2, high of 17. Not above freezing again for 7 days. It will push our limits of keeping the pools running. I think the biggest challenge is to keep ice off the power lines. Keep electricity to the house and I'm still confident it will all...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

My thoughts are the same as yours because when I open my pump basket lid the incoming air lets the water flow on through the filter and heater returning to the pool and water will also flow backwards to the skimmer and drains if I haven't closed the valves. Someone here in the thread though...

Thanks @ajw22 and @mknauss for the info about the heater and condensation. I don't recall hearing that or reading that anywhere, but good info. Always learning.

That is the difference between OKC and DFW that I speak of. I have two relatives in the Choctaw area, one winterizes and one doesn't. If my water were to ever be in danger of dropping below 30 my heater is my backup option to see if I couldn't at least keep it from dropping further. Help me...

Any risk in running pump in 10 degree weather without a heater?

Very few of us South of the Red River winterize our pools. I grew up in OK, and it is amazing how different the weather can be in OKC vs DFW most of the years. OKC sees much more snow and colder temps just 3 hours away. However it is the 5 to 10 year cold snap like we have coming that get...

Now I'm your neighbor just another 30 miles to the South, and I did think you were doing this in case you lost power. That tape will not do so well without power- lol. I'm just going to wing it. Water is 44 degrees. If we lose power I just open the pump list basket and most of my water...

    Need advice on mortar repair

Thank you for the continued replies. This gives me options for cleaning and gets me on the right path. I had wondered if the baking soda wouldn't neutralize, thanks for the confirmation. I will be more gentle on cleaning, but it had gotten really bad over the winter. We do have pumice...

    Need advice on mortar repair

Thanks for the feedback on the issue. It looks like I worked on it with the right product, which is acid, but I definitely need to dilute and I need to neutralize after. I did only rinse with water. If anyone else has advice, I obviously need to do a little more cleaning, but more so I need...

    Need advice on mortar repair

Just to be up front, I got too aggressive with the acid earlier this summer. We have one main spot on the hot tub that seems to have scale - assumed to be calcium. It's almost like it just pours out of this one spot and runs down the side and leaves a white mess. We don't have a problem...

Beautiful pool - new owner - help me keep it sparkling and fresh!

I don't think you have to worry about the Nature 2 cartridge if it is very old. I've left my last one in for a couple of years now. I didn't know about this site in the beginning. I don't have salt, and have moved to liquid chlorine. I think I last repaced my cartride 2 years ago. They...

How much Muriatic Acid do you keep on hand?

I keep a couple of gallons, but I add about 1 to 1.5 cups a week to the pool. Some pools need it and some don't. It will just depend upon your usage as to how much you keep.
