Hi All,

First time pool purchaser here. Thank you all for the wealth of information you provide here. We are in talks to install a pool in our backyard. Decided this is our forever home and would like to make the backyard a resort for the future. Kids are teens and young adult, but so we want something they and us will use now, but also hoping grandchildren might be part of the future.

Free form shape Pool size 14' x 28' Deck size (with screen) 21' x 42'8"

14' wide is pretty much the max due to the size of our yard and required offsets. I do feel that 28' might be on the short end, but I am also wanting enough deck space for lounging, gathering, etc.

Depth 3' to 6' I know many recommend going 3.5' at a minimum, but my wife is short and doesn't want the shallow end to be too deep. Contractor suggested 5.5' for the deep end but I pushed for 6' as I am taller (6') and want to be able to be mostly submerged :)

Here are the basic specs laid out in the proposal from the contractor I am leaning towards: (color highlights are from contractor)

The 18" raised spa was recommended over the standard 12" to make it easier to get in and out of as we age. This adds about $2000 to cost. Open to any pros & cons you can think of on this.

The sun bench area is 4' at its longest with 6" deep of water. Is this deep enough for lounging?

I am thinking about extending deck and screen another four feet out to allow for more lounging area (on the left side of the picture near the shallow end.

Thank you all so much for your feedback.
Mike

Mike,
18” RBB for the spa is a good height for a few reasons, 12” is too low to comfortably sit on with your knees being bent and harder to stand from, the falling water is more prevalent at 18” (sound and visual). This is the height I also suggest to my customers.
One possible problem that may occur in the future is deterioration of the plaster”butter” being removed from the falling spa spillway water making contact with only 6” of water depth on the first step. You may want this depth to be deeper.

Typical water depth of a sun bench (first step) is between 7”-9” of water. Lounging depth depends on the lounge height that you plan on using.

Few side notes to think about having added to the bid, auto fill and auto overflow pipe, pour-a-lids for the skimmer and autofill, add a light to the sun bench.

I'd require a CCP 420 or larger. Fl pool builders are notorious for installing a filter that is too small.

You don't mention the volume of the pool. Ensure the cell is at least 2x the volume of the pool.

It is not clear what "Pentair Automation System" in included. Make sure you have them specify. Post here and we can comment.

AH,

Thank you for the good feedback! I will take your suggestions into consideration.

PS,

Thank you for your feedback! Pool volume is around 12 - 13,000 gallons. So IC40 sounds sufficient. I will look into your filter size and automation suggestions.

Depth 3' to 6'
3' is extremely shallow. I'd suggest 4' for the shallow end.

6' is an awkward depth since it's too deep to stand, but too shallow for diving, etc. I'd suggest 5' for the "deep" end of your pool.

Equipment notes:
-Get the IntelliCenter load center with built in SWCG transformer.
-The CC200 isn't even close the largest available. Get the CCP420 or CCP520. Bigger is better.
-GloBrite is an older generation of lights. Get MicroBrites or perhaps look at Jandy's WaterColors nicheless lights.
-Get two skimmers independently plumbed to your pad.
-Pool main drain is optional. I'd go without one.
-I'd recommend against an IFCS.
-Get a quality robot instead of a suction or pressure cleaner.
-They'll probably give you the cheapest pole, brush, and test kit possible. Invest in a quality pole, a ProTuff brush, and a TF-Pro Salt.
-HPs heat efficiently, but very slowly. I'd recommend a gas heater for your spa. That's also a very high price for an UltraTemp. Regardless, make sure your heater or HP has a bypass.

Get the next generation Globrite and it is as good a light as Pentair has. It is better than the Microbrite that has its own failures and has not been updated.

In 2024, Pentair released an improved GloBrite light with a blue gasket and black end cap (left side), with improvements to the electronics inside to fix the failures the lights have been having.[

Wasn't aware of that, thanks for the info!
