Water squirts out of skimmer lid when pump shuts off

Installed a new pump lid about two years ago because the old one was yellowing. Have since replaced and lubed the ring twice the most recent a couple days ago. I notice that when the pump is running there is no water leaking out, but once it shuts off some water squirts out the top for a second then stops. When I check on it the next day, the water is generally down to where the inlet pipe is and it takes a little bit to prime. Concerned of burning up the pump if not enough water gets into pump in time. I have tightened lid hand tight then a couple of taps with rubber hammer. Leak seems to be in one spot on the top of housing but don’t see or feel any cracks or damage. You would think if it was going to leak it would be under pressure but the opposite is happening. Ang ideas?

Is the water squirting out of the skimmer lid or the pool pump lid?

Show us pictures of where the water is squirting out.

Shad,

When the pump is running, the pump lid is under suction and is sucked down against the top of the pump.

When you turn the pump off, there is no more suction.

If water than squirts out, it is normally because the filter has compressed air in it. This air forces the water backwards and out of the pump lid.

Find and fix the air leak, and your problem should go away.

As Allen says, show us some pics of your equipment pad..

Thanks,

Jim R.

I am going to order a new seal for the filter housing cover and try that. If you look at the picture of the top of the pump cover, the water always seems to spurt out at about the 7 o’clock position.

Completely normal for a Sta-Rite Max-E-Glass, especially on that small Hayward filter. They all do that eventually. It is not a problem with the pump.

So when I took off the lid on the filter housing to replace the gasket there was no water in the filter housing and of course hardly any water in the pump. After replacing with new seal still does the same thing, squirting water only out of one side of the pump cover after I get the pump primed up and running and then shutting it off. After awhile the water will drain back into the system, and pump loses prime. When I do turn it back on It takes awhile for the pump to prime up and I’m just concerned about burning it up with no water going thru it for 30-40 seconds. I’m wondering now if there might be an issue with the lid or the housing as the water only squirts out more or less on one side all the time.

The pump is designed to self prime and can run for a few minutes with no water. A minute or two to prime will not damage the pump.

You probably have a small air leak on the pressure side which is why water drains back into the system. Those are hard to find but keep your eyes open for any damp spots. It could be your pump lid seal. Maybe buy another pump lid and O-ring.

Good morning,
I replaced the seal around the lid a few weeks ago. When it warms up a bit I will take it off and give that area a good inspection, hopefully no cracks or anything. Thanks for the info on the pump regarding burning up..that was my main concern.

Check the O rings on the pump-pot drain and the tank-body drain. They dry out and can cause the issue you are experiencing. As long as there is some water in the pot there is also water in the body. If the pump can prime on its own, there should be no problem. When we talk of a pump burning it refers to the seal. The water that is there will keep that from happening.
Sta-Rite University classes taught that a pump should be able to prime "in a reasonable amount of time." A couple of minutes is fine.
