Something must be broken

I just closed my pool yesterday before the first cold snap. When I pulled the bottom plug on my DE filter, some small pieces came out. As I had no time to spare I just moved forward and closed the pool. Now I want to figure out what broke. Does anyone have any idea what these pieces could belong to?

This thing is a cent (aka Penny).

It is a type of money.

It is not part of the check valve.

Note: The U.S. Mint's official name for the coin is "cent" and the U.S. Treasury's official name is "one cent piece".

The colloquial term penny derives from the British coin of the same name.

Thank you. That was interesting information. Although the penny was only used for scale I still learned something today.

Keep us updated on where that flap ended up
I waited to take it apart until I received my replacement parts. The flap didn't go far. I put pool lube on the o-ring and the flap seal. Now I know something else I need to check periodically. At least it is an extremely easy repair.
