Converting to SWG and variable speed pump

Hello,

How difficult would it be to convert my current set up to a variable speed pool pump and SWG? I want a more efficient pump to lower costs and SWG to help lower maintaince as right now I am having to get liquid chlorine.

Current pool pump is Jandy Flopro 1.5 HP pool pump and I have attached photo below of setup. I don't use the in line chlorinator or the polaris booster pump.

Is the power to your existing pump 220V?

I will check that when I get home. Whats easist way to tell is its 220V? I know I have a seperate breaker box for pool equipment on other side of home.

Check the breaker that goes to the pump. Take a picture and post it here if unsure.

If wired correctly with correct colors, one way to tell 120V and 240V apart is 120V will have wire colors of BLACK (Live), WHITE (Neutral), and GREEN (Ground), whereas 240V will have BLACK (Live Phase 1), RED (Live Phase 2, sometimes also black), and GREEN (Ground).

The breaker to the pump has two 20 amp breakers that are connected togeather and am 90% sure its 240V.

With 220V, look at a Calimar VS. CaliMar® Variable Speed Pool Pump | 3HP | CMARVSP3.0
Be sure you get pump unions.
Look at a Circupool RJ45 for a SWCG.

Thanks for the advice and I was looking at that exact pump as well!

Is installing the SWCG something I should be able to do myself with current electrical setup? I have a polaris pump and inline chlorine generator that I could remove from the electrical outlets if needed.

I would think so if you have basic electrical understanding.

Any harm in going with the 60k pool SWCG if prices are similar?

No. You adjust the % generation and pump run time based on your FC needs.

I took a photo of the electrical wiring on the current pool pump and looks as if is wired 220V, and wanted to know if I am correct?

Also, I have attached photos of junction box wiring that goes to pool pump and polaris vacuum pump.

I do have a seperate question if the timer that in my garage is for pool pump? It is set to on but the pool pump runs 24/7 since I started it this season.

Also when installing a SWCG and VSP do I need to install a timer or does the built in timer in VSP suffice?

You will need a timer or other device to insure the SWCG is powered completely off when the VS pump is not running.

I'm no expert and won't try to identify what's going on with your wiring, but the timer in the last photo is running on 120 volts. It looks like it's set up to turn on a 5 am and off at 8:xx pm. If the pump is connected to 240 volts, it's not connected to this timer.

Thank for your input! My guess it was a timer for old outdoor lighting or possibly a water fountain that used to be on the property.

Which timer do you recommend to use with Calimar pump and Circupool SWCG?

Any basic timer will work to control the schedule for the SWCG. Depends on if you are using 110 or 220, if you want wifi, etc.
