Hello All,

I've had a few posts, but this one will be specific to my new pool (just filled Saturday 6/10/23) losing FC. I've been using my Taylor test kit religiously over the past few days getting my PH, TA, and CH inline with NPC startup guidelines. Now on to the new issue I'm currently having. Yesterday was day three so I started adding chlorine to bring my FC up to 3PPM. Interested in others opinions on whether the reduction of FC could be lack of CYA, algae, or new pool? Water is crystal clear, better than the day we filled the pool

Timeline of levels:

6/13 7am
PH: 8 (added 2 cups of muriatic acid to bring down)
TA: 80
CH: 175
CYA: 5 (Not registering on Taylor so going off pool store reading obtained in the am)
FC: 0 (First attempt at adding chlorine, added 2/3 gallon per pool math app at 7am )

6/13 7pm
PH: 7.6
TA: 80
CH: Not Tested
CYA: Not Tested - Haven't added stabilizer yet
FC: 0 (Panicked and added a gallon of 10% bleach)

6/13 10pm
FC: 7

6/14 8am
PH: 8 (added 2 cups of MA to reduce)
TA: 80
CH: Not tested
FC: 6
CYA: Added 3 lbs via sock method to achieve 30-40

6/14 3pm
FC: 0 (Panicked again added another Gal of 10% since I'll be away from pool until saturday afternoon)

Chlorine in a pool with 0 CYA has a half life of under 50 minutes. So it is essentially gone in a couple hours.

You have added CYA. It will start to protect the chlorine.

Wow, half life under an hour!! I'm really disappointed with the PB not giving me much guidance around startup chems. Basically they told me to add 3 gallons of MA on startup, monitor PH, and add a cap of cal hypo on day 3. Not a single mention of TA, CH, or CYA all of which I'm balancing on my own. Thank goodness I was prepared by reading all the info on this site. You all have given me the foundational knowledge needed to manage the chemistry.

I definitely feel anxious about leaving the pool untested until saturday. I'm having someone add 8oz of 73% Cal Hypo while I'm gone. I know it's a guessing game for the next couple days but I want to be conservative with FC. Thoughts?

Most pool owners ignore the pool. That is what they are used to. And likely, they know little about pool water chemistry. You are wayyyyyyy ahead of everyone they have dealt with.

Be careful using cal hypo. Those granules tend to not fully dissolve and if they fall on your finish, you will find little white dots later.

Instead of cal hypo can they add liquid chlorine or bleach? It doesn’t matter much if they add a little too much but adding too little may be a painful experience when you get back

Agree, but I used my last gallon before I left. Last night 1 gal incresead FC from 0-7 so I anticipate the same result today. I'm really banking on the stabilizer I added earlier kicking in. I will have the pool sitter predilute the call hypo.

This is a drawback of having the PB finish weeks ahead of schedule. We had this trip planned for a few months so couldn't back out with a financial penalty! I know it's all a bit rushed and I wish I could've trained the pool sitter with the Taylor test kit!!
