Pool resurfacing prices

We bought a house with an existing pool that has a pebble tec finish that is 17 years old. Now it is time to resurface the pool. The PB we have met with is quoting $12k for prep and resurfacing with Stone Scape mini pebble finish. The pool is a custom shape that is 30' long and 17' at the widest part narrowing down to 9' at the narrow end. Deepest is 6' and shallow end at steps is 4'. Also a raised spa that is 8' x 6'. I'm guessing on the high side we are 566 sq ft.

I'm struggling to determine if that is a good price w/o obtaining another quote including going back to Pebble Tec which I understand from research would cost more.

Any comments on others that have recently done a resurfacing and the related costs? I realize supplies are a lot higher cost wise than last year so hoping to hear from others that had recently projects completed.

Thanks

The questions Jim asked are very important.

It is very important that you get at least 3 quotes and go from there. IF you can get more the better it will be.

It is best they do a FULL chip out with flat chisels.

Thanks for the replies. The waterline tile is staying as it was just replaced. That was why we drained the pool and discovered some hollow spots.

I’m getting quotes from three different PB that each use different products - Pebble Tec, Stone Scapes and Wet Edge. I wanted to hear from all three applications and compare quotes. Interesting in speaking with the Wet Edge PB who I am meeting with next week, they initially look to only chisel out the hollow spots, then apply a bonding agent over the entire surface and apply their finish. I’d they get into the job and realize more removal is necessary they will advise and adjust their quote. This sounds like shingling a roof over existing older shingles. This concerns me so I’m interested in hearing their pitch.

That’s called a skim-coat and you absolutely don’t want that. It’s cheaper for the PB to do that, they’ll charge you about the same as the other guys, and you’ll be left with a thinner finish that’s more likely to fail.

Chip it out to the gunite shell or don’t do t at all. Skim coats are what people do when they want to flip a house with an ugly pool. Like people that paint over moldy walls to make an interior look good for a sale.

Its cheaper for PB to not chip out but I also think its a lot cheaper for the owner. Chip-out costs in my experience do get passed on. When we resurfaced it the builders we talked to said a full chip could be done but it would add 5-7k expense. We did the skim coat. Next time we have to do it I am sure we’ll pony up for the full chip

Our local Pebble Tec rep came out and the quote shows prep as "chip out the hollow aggregate (10% surface included in the quote), chip around penetrations, pack with hydraulic cement, acid wash and apply bond coat". Further in the quote it says that two inches beyond the loose material will be removed and if more than 10% of the plaster has to be chipped out there will be an additional charge. I have emailed them back asking about their rationale around not chipping out the entire pool and I await their response. Thoughts on their proposal? They want almost $3k for their prep.

Update, the Stonescape PB said they also only chisel out the hollow spots. I've asked him also why and how much more to chisel out the entire pool. I did read that you can apply another coat over the original coat but not another layer in the future over the 2nd layer. Then the entire pool needs to be chiseled out.

A normal layer of plaster is 3/8” on the walls and usually 1/2” on the floor. Your tile line is set to accommodate that thickness to make a smooth transitions. When all you do is a partial chip out and skim coat, your going to get just a very thin layer of plaster (maybe 1/16” at most) in some areas.

Ask them how they will handle the tile line to keep the edge flat?

My guess is they will carefully tool a groove all around the tile line. Unless of course you are chipping out and replacing the tile as well.

As you can see, a skim coat will save you money and the applicator time and man-hours, but the product you will receive will be far less robust and may not visually look great in terms of the lines it produces. Also, any waviness in the surface now, if skim coated, will not smooth it out. The thicknesses are too low for that.

What did you go with? How much was it? Did they give you the sq ft total they used for their pricing?
