Hello everyone. I have an issue that I hope anyone can help me with. I was adding some Soda Ash to my pool this weekend. I laid the bucket down by the pool and the bucket was tipped over by my dog playing. 10 lbs of Soda Ash are now in my 10,000-gallon pool and the water is entirely cloudy. How can I remedy the situation? Appreciate any advice.

Hi neighbor....

Any chance you have one of the recommended test kits and can post a full set of current test results?

Why were you adding Soda Ash in the first place?

Welcome to TFP.

Soda Ash/Washing Soda = big pH change, big TA change.

PoolMath says 10lbs of soda ash in a 10K pool will raise pH by 3.5 and raise TA by 113.

1 Gallon of 31.45% muriatic acid will lower pH by 3.1 and lower TA by 50.

You need a good pH test an TA test. Your pH will test high and be unreadable.

I would add 32 ounces of 31% muriatic acid, wait 30 minutes, test the pH, if pH is still high then repeat until pH is in the 7's.

Once you get pH into the 7's you can see what your TA is.

The sudden pH rise caused calcium to precipitate out of the water and cloud it up. That will clear over time.

What were the readings before the soda ash was added?

What are all readings now?

To get the TA back to where it was, you would need to add 290 oz of acid, but you can only add a limited amount at a time.

Use Pool Math to calculate the correct amount of acid you can add to lower the pH from where it is to about 7.2.

If the pH is off the chart, use 8.3 as the pH.

For example if the TA is 200, the correct amount of acid to add is 57 oz.

Allow an hour or two before retesting and add more acid as needed.

Brush well multiple times.

I tested my water this morning and it was showing zero for Alkalinity and PH. I read that I should add either Soda Ash or Sodium Bicarbonate to raise the PH.
I don't have the exact results before the dump of Soda Ash.
Right now the water is cloudy and here are the current results.

Using a Leslie's Deluxe Pool-care OTO Test Kit (Taylor)
CL: 5+
BR: 10+
PH: 9+
Alk: 80 ppm

Using Test Strips
FCI: 0
BR: 0
ALK: 80
PH: 7.8
TH: 250

Does this help?

Given your limited testing tools if you have a pH of 9+ and TA of 80 then follow my suggestions above to lower your pH into the 7's using about 15 oz of 31.45% muriatic acid for each cycle..

The Taylor K-2006C or TFT Test Kits is recommended.

Test Kits Compared

Thank you everyone. I will start with adding Muriatic Acid and keep testing. I assume also that I should keep my pool running until I get this under control? Also, will buy the better test kit then what I currently have.

How did your TA get down to zero?

Are you using trichlor tabs?

What is the CYA?

If your CYA is over 60 ppm, you need to be extra careful not to use too much acid as it will just overshoot the pH to being too low again.

If the CYA is over 60 ppm, you should consider getting it down to 60 ppm or lower.

I would also check the salinity to see what that is for an accurate CSI reading.

Can you show how dark the OTO chlorine test is?

If it is super dark, the FC needs to come down until the FC is in the correct range.
