Normally we shock after finding a mouse or a bird or what have you, however this year we have been getting small frogs coming up dead in the skimmer. Today my chlorine is at 2 and ph is 7.5. Do I have to shock it after each small frog? I feel like we aren't getting to use our pool as much bc its always being shocked.

A FC of 2 is below minimum for all CYA levels. Are you following the FC/CYA Levels?

There is no reason to raise the FC due to a dead animal carcass unless it has begun to severely decompose and has dropped your FC level below minimum for your CYA.

I suggest you review Pool Care Basics

+1. He swam into the skimmer and couldn't overcome the suction and drowned. There is no bacteria or ickies to kill.

Since we've bought our house I've found two baby rabbits and a mouse in the pool. I never even thought about raising the chlorine afterwards because people let their dogs swim in their pools all the time and they are FAR larger than a mouse or bird.

Yes. It is normally at a 3-5 but I was out there adding in the daily chlorine and cleaning skimmers when I found it. So it will have its boost and be back up to at least 3. It wasn't severely decomposed. Skimmers get checked once a day at least so it has been there a day at the most. Cya at last weekly check was 30.

It's just what I read to do and it kind of gives me some peace of mind a bit lol

Must be the season. Found a dead frog on the third step this morning. Swam yesterday so it must be a recent drowning. I keep my FC in the higher regions, 6-8 just as an in case.
Does that bother anyone with sensitive skin? Highest I keep it is around 5 but I add liquid chlorine so it fluctuates and gets lower before I add some the next day.

Looked over the pool care basics again just to make sure and I'm doing everything as recommended....except I do test my cya weekly since it's on the minimum range.

OK == you just stated 'shocking' which is NOT a TFP practice

Which we know you can swim up to the SLAM level FC. You should never increase your FC above SLAM level.

Ok on my TFP Calculator

Correct. However after finding dead animals and big parties we normally will shock the pool. Otherwise I use the test kit and the TFP calculator and add chemicals as suggested per the calculator. We have never had an issue with this. My cya levels are 30 and the recommended chlorine level is 4-6 with SLAM. My ideal is set at 5 so every day it gives me the amount to add to get there. We have had alot of rain this whole week so I am assuming that's why my fc might have been lower. So with that said.....aside from SLAM we do shock with dead animals and large parties. I know it's not a TFP practice but I haven't seen anyone say you can't. Even on the cya chlorine page....if I'm wrong please point me in the right direction to where I may have missed it. I just don't like dead animals so a shock makes me feel it's safe lol. I am aware that's likely just a mental mindset. My kids are swimming now bc its the first non rainy evening in a week but I can't bc in my mind it's not been shocked and gross dead frog germs are in there

TFP encourages a trouble free, least cost practice. Adding chlorine that is unnecessary is what most folks call 'shocking'.

But do as you like. Do stay below your SLAM level FC or your liner will be the worse for it.

For reference, SLAM level is 12ppm with the CYA at 30ppm. Your nowhere close to too much chlorine at 5ppm

With a 30 cya level it says 4-6 fc is ideal correct? Today I just tested and it was 5.5 with a cc of less than .5. 12 is what you keep it at when slamming correct? At least that's what I understood it as. This is my first year of doing the SLAM way. I was a new pool owner when I first joined and all that talk was very overwhelming so the past 2 summers I did it the shock every week or two and used the phos free.

Correct.

If you keep your FC in the recommended range, you shouldn't need to shock or SLAM. The key is to maintain your FC at the recommend range.

re: dead critters - I know it seems creepy, but a dead mouse is a tiny fraction of the size of a dog. It's not even as big as a dog's foot. Would you shock your pool if your neighbor's dog jumped in? Just sayin....
