We recently put in a 24 foot pool due to our village code we have to have a fence around it so this is what we’re looking at so far we still have lots of work to do but I can’t do all of the work so I am getting some assistance form my engineer father to help me figure out how to create a pool reel for our pool. Again our pool is 24 foot the solar cover that we have is either 8–10 mill. We were thinking of putting post with a reel on top and a pole to hold the cover it’s self…you’ll see it in my mock up picture it’s very rough sketch because I don’t have a phone that has great drawing abilities but at least you get the idea so my question is what would be the best reel how strong of a pole needs to connect the two spinning pieces to make sure that I can hold the weight of the solar cover and has anyone done anything like this before and has pictures or instructions thank you so much we appreciate any help we can get…again the fence is required by the place that we live so we’re just doing what we can to make it all work and usually I’m the one home with the kids and manhandling that cover is really difficult. No money for a deck at the moment…

I have this reel on my 27' pool

I used to use a saddle on the side of my pool. Then I switched to this reel. I have had the reel for 3 seasons now, and I might go back to the saddle. My wife has a hard time with getting the reel off the pool, and cannot get it back on. My daughters have no chance with it. They had issues with the saddle system as well. I think it all boils down to the fact that a 27' cover is heavy, and is difficult for shorter people to heft up onto a 48" pool wall (I'm 6'4" so it is easy for me). I may go back to a saddle and slice the cover into three parts and see how that works out.

I am also not thrilled with the weight of the cover on my pool walls. It does not sit there rolled up, but there is a lot of point loading when I am pivoting it on and off of the pool.

I am also not sure how you will use a reel with your set up. With that fence all the way around the pool, how are you going to get it off of the pool once you roll your cover onto it?

Thought about putting the post in the ground towards the back so the cover would sit on the post and not the fence. My dad thought about putting a pulling sting to glide it on and off the pool. It would still be a two person job but no actual lifting required the crank handle and Paul would do all the lifting and one person would have to crank while the other person pulled the string across the pool.

The sting idea works well. I did it to mine. You cannot unroll the cover by just pulling on the rope. You would end up ripping the rope out of the cover (and I have plastic grommets on mine where I attached the rope). You have to un-crank it as well. However the ropes are invaluable in getting the cover started in the right direction. The thing rarely unrolls with both sides going in the proper direction. Using attached ropes to guide it, instead of messing around with a skimmer pole, is much easier.

I cannot put posts next to my pool to relieve the weight of the reel - my pool is 27'. My reel is at its maximum extension. I was forced to mount my reel to my top rail.
