Iowa Vinyl Pool

Omg just read the instructions for the pool pump. It says never run the pump dry.... um I had no idea. I thought you could just leave it on the cover, plugged in, wait for rain. Yikes... 😱 Now I know what I did to the pump.

What kind of pump did you have? The ones I have seen for the auto covers have a float in them like @Newdude mentions that should only run when they sense they need to pump the water out like this one....

That is what I keep on my cover, but like a sump pump, could have had a float go bad and then it just runs till it burns out. I just keep mine on the cover when its closed, fingers crossed, no issues yet.

That is exactly what I had.

I have some dumb questions about swg's. If we wanted to get one we would probably want an IC40 right?

Any questions asked are SMART ones.

Yes. 2X is plenty up north. But the math works in your favor or going bigger, so going to 60k would be 50% more life than the 40k unit at only 20% more cost.

Without automation or the thoughts you might get automation over the life of the cell, you are free to shop around for any brand. I got the Pentair because I particularly liked it. My first one was chosen by the PB and it worked great.

My husband took the pump apart and then put it back together. Tested it out, it's working again... 🤷‍♀️
That is great news! Not a lot of people would have taken it apart to see what's going on in there, but saved yourself from having to go get a new one!

I would also take a serious look at the IC60 if you are going all in. With a 21k gallon pool, the IC40 is just a shade under 2X the size you would want, close enough really. And with your pool covered when not in use, and you closing your pool for the winter, the IC40 should last you quite a while. But the IC60 should, in theory, last you a lot longer, and as @Newdude mentions, for only about a 20% premium.

For reference, my pool is only about 12k gallons. I have the IC40 and run mine at about 20% this time of the year. Way oversized but should last me a lot longer. I have the autocover sensor tied into my Intellicenter though, so my IC40 won't produce chlorine when the cover is closed, so your numbers may be a little different, but with an auto cover, and a shorter swim season, an IC40 should be ok, but I'd probably look towards the IC60 if you can swing it.
