What’s a good rule of thumb for the amount of time to backwash and filter?
You should have a little sight glass, bubble shaped thing that is clear. When you backwash, the water in the sight glass will get grey/brown with all the stuff that you have filtered out of the pool. When the site glass get fairly clear and you can see through the water (in the sight glass), you are done with backwash. Same thing for rinse. When the glass go clear, you are good!!!

Progress is good but keep at it. I found in the end that frequent testing, brushing and ensuring to keep FC at SLAM levels was key. Cleaning the sand filter helped a bit as well. You'll get there, it just takes a long time.

So you need to get that FC back up into the right range again. CC of .5 is good but 1.5FC is too low. Are you using the Pool Math app yet to help you with your addition quantities? Given the troubles that you've had getting to this point and the 1.0 CC value last night, you might want to continue to SLAM for another day or two.

Yes have been using the app. Once the sun comes out in the daytime the fc chlorine drops. I will continue ur for the next two days and check again in a couple nights.

You'll know you passed the OCLT If your FC level remained the same, or went down by 1.0 or less. If that's the case, you should be in the clear. Doesn't hurt to maintain SLAM for another day just to be sure but sounds like you are there. What's next is to SWIM and enjoy your pool :) Also, now you focus on the maintain part. Keep an eye on your pool's water chemistry. FC and PH are the key numbers to watch and ensure stay close to where you want them. Now that you know how to SLAM your pool, you most likely don't want to do it again. There's lots of great info on how to maintain your pool here so I'm sure you'll have no problem.

Great, thank you so much. Never want to SLAM again😔. Maintain is what I will do now. 😁

Check FC and pH daily for a while to get a feel for the pool. Once you know how your pool works you can cut that back a bit, and test every other day or every third day. Add FC to make sure you're well above the minimum for your CYA - you want to target the top of the target range and ideally not let it get below the bottom of the target range before you add more chlorine to the pool. :)
