Starting a new build here in the frozen north. After excavating had a nightmare issue with water and the clay. Decided to build a pad. Laid 6x6 timbers out today on 4" of washed limestone. Starting to fill with 3/4" crushed to even it up with the washed. Compacted the first lift. Ran out of gravel. Tomorrow I will do another 2" lift if the next load shows up and compact it. Then one more later this week so we can start assembly this weekend. Planning to leave 2" at the top for pea rock or something that looks nice. Total base will be around 8". The virgin soil is pure clay and was like jello even after 5 days of baking in the sun. It then rained and it was like walking on crisco.

Couple questions...

1. Doing this pad this way, anything I need to worry about other than getting it compacted well? I went over the first lift 4x with the compactor.

2. I have a load of mason sand and a load of ag lime. Which is preferred for under the liner inside the walls? I have a pad to put on top of whatever we use and a foam cove.

3. Between the base and the rock will I need geotextile to keep the base from sinking into the rock over time or will this being compacted like this be ok?

4. Pavers... I would assume I still want them under the side supports, how about under legs on the round ends? I know one builder in WI has a blog saying not to use them since they can lift with the frost and rip the liner.

The good news is that when I went to put the pressure plates on the holes lined up very well! The posts are all within 1/16" of each other. That seemed to be our limit on exactness for them. Tomorrow morning we will do the other side, put the stone dust under the straps, and I will start loading the base in. Hopefully we have time to get the bottom rail in and leveled so we can do the wall/liner on Sunday. Then to get the electrical done and the plumbing. This is a heck of a project.

Let’s see if the dang thing stays standing. Shop vac was too powerful and wanted to pop the wall out of the rail. The liner is on the tight side.

About 1/3 of the way full and still standing. The legs and wall do not appear to have moved at all. The liner is getting closer and closer to the wall where there is not water and definitely firmly against the wall where there is. Not sure why I am so nervous but so far so good.
