New salt water pool owner here need some guidance

A CC of 0 is great.

You don't want any CC reading.
yeah that's what I was thinking... the water stays clear after I do the r003 it stays clear the entire time. guess I am on the right track thank you for the help all of you and I will test again later again

cya is at 90-100 roughly. I am going to be adding some fresh water to dilute that and the FC a little bit while I am not running my generator of day 2

Advice I was given from experts here was to maintain FC at 10% of your CYA level and that has worked well for me. If your CYA is 90-100, that would mean maintaining FC at 9-10. Your pool would be safe up to SLAM level, which would be FC of 35-39 with your CYA level of 90-100. See chart below.

I Was reading that on the chart but it doesn't make a ton of sense to me yet. but it kinda does. I am so sorry I am really new at this, having a big party next week, not trying to have people go in a pool that is not correctly maintained. so as the FC burns off I should continue to dilute it to lower my CYA as well.

With CYA of 90-100 your pool is safe to swim with a FC of between 8 and 35.

You are fine to have your big party.

Long term having CYA at 90-100 can create problems. That has nothing to do with your having a safe party.

CYA of 90-100 should have a FC of 10-12. So for your big party increase your Fc from 8 to 10-12.

Working on lowering your CYA by dilution is good. A FC level of 10-12 will be fine at lower CYA levels.

ok not running my salt cell still today so 2 full days off and diluting a little and then tomorrow I will start to run it again, any idea what % I should run at ? it is a 20k gallon pool with an IC40 so it produces a decent amount of chlorine

How long do you run your pump and SWG?

Running your IC40 at 30% will generate 2.5 ppm/day if run for 24 hours. 40% will generate 3.4ppm in 24 hours.

I would turn on your SWG today. With a FC of 8 you are at your minimum and don't want it dropping below that. You will lose close to 2-3 ppm/day from the sun.

ok will run it later.... I run it for 3, 3 hour increments throughout the day , 12am-3am , 6am-9am , 3pm-6pm. so 9 hours total

should I run it at 60% for 9 hours ? that would be 1.9ppm I assume that's close to what is burning off currently.
then I can retest it tomorrow evening ?

also with the Taylor 2006k kit , I am showing an 8 today,

I used a Clorox test strip just to see and its showing my FC as a 3 and my TC as a 5

I am obviously trusting the Taylor kit over the Clorox kit but just find it interesting

I'm going to buck the trend here a little bit...

Since you have a SWG, we typically advise CYA in the 60-80 range anyway. You're not that far above that. I say leave it be and in a month or two you'll probably find that it's dropped near 80 on its own. CYA does tend to come down slowly over time without draining.

The risk of having it that high is that it takes a great deal more chlorine to reach SLAM levels if you have an algae outbreak. But as long as you keep your FC within the target range, you shouldn't have any algae and this becomes a non-issue. With a SWG, keeping your FC up should be easy.

It's a judgment call. If you're more comfortable draining, go ahead and drain. But I don't think it's an absolute necessity for you.

Throw the strips away. You wouldn't keep a broken watch to compare to your good watch to see if they agree, would you?

not draining thought about it, just leaving it be, just setup IC40 to 60% again for 9 hours a day. that should replenish what I am loosing

Keep a close eye on your FC for a couple of weeks and make sure you're keeping up with it, especially after your big swimming party. A heavy bathing load can drop it more than normal. You definitely don't want to fall below 8 FC.

After a while, you'll develop a good feel for how much your pool uses and you can back off to testing a couple of times per week.

Why do you think three 3 hour increments is preferable to just running for 9 hours straight?

Your FC of 8 is LESS then your target of 10.

You need to RAISE your FC by 2 ppm in addition to replacing the daily sun burnoff of FC.

You need to run your SWG to generate more then your daily burnoff. 1.9ppm is not enough.

You need to run at 100% for 9 hours to generate 3.1 ppm of FC which will raise your FC up towards 10ppm over the next few days.

also with the Taylor 2006k kit , I am showing an 8 today,

And you need to get it to 10 to be safe for your big party.

I used a Clorox test strip just to see and its showing my FC as a 3 and my TC as a 5

Trash those. They are meaningless.

Interesting that Clorox sells stuff like that?

You do not see CYA degradation in the OPs NJ area the way you do down in your area.

And you don't need CYA 80 in NJ.

The OP will have high CYA until the pool is closed for the winter if it is not drained down.

not sure...should I Just run it 9 hours straight ? is it better at day or night ?

ok so let me get back up to 100% ... so what is my ideal FC if my cya is 80-100 I wanna be at ? cause according the chart on here its a minimum of 5 and max of 7 ? based on the SWG part of the chart

I feel like I accidentally SLAMMED my pool.

I maintain FC at 10% of CYA or above. *NEVER* fall below 8%. The problem for you is that if your CYA is 100, this means you need to maintain FC at 10 ppm. That's not harmful, but you won't be able to get an accurate pH reading because pH tests are affected by FC at 10 or more.
