Hi, I am new to TFP, you were recommended by another TFP member. Here are my first chemical numbers:
FC = 9
CH = 575
TA = 120
CYA = 110
PH = 8
What do I need to do to get my numbers back to normal?

How are you testing your pool water chemistry?

If the CYA is correct, a 50% drain and refill is in order. It will lower your CH some too. I suspect you have been using trichlor with cal hypo shocks?

I ordered the TF100 Test Kit and a TFP member helped me run my first set of test. Before this I had a pool maintenance doing the pool.

Welcome to TFP! Did you do the diluted water CYA test? To determine if you are even higher than the CYA number you posted? If you did not do that yet, you'll want to complete the diluted test to make sure of the amount of water to drain and refill.

Oh, btw, did it take much convincing to come over to the light of TFP? Or the forum member has been suggesting for a while? Regardless, you got this.

Hello to all,

I helped perform all the tests w Tf-100 & magnetic stirrer.

Re CYA, I performed the normal pool water to bottom label, agent to top label, shake & wait 30 sec’s, shake again, have back to sun and hold tube down to waist. It was definitely a 110 when the dot was gone.

The OP had a pool guy using pucks as Marty noted. I recommended 3ft drain which is close to 1/2 depth, but suggested to post results on TFP to gain a consensus. By draining 1/2, it would lower CYA, TA & CH. We tested City water and I believe it was 150ppm.

If you feel it’s mandatory to perform a diluted CYA test, pls post process and OP can perform. I’ll assist if needed.

Thanks for everyone’s help & advice,
tstex

Dang @Mdragger88 types faster than me. Do the pool water to bottom label. Then add tap water to top label. Shake. Pour off this combined water to bottom label then add CYA reagent to top label. Shake then do the test the same as above and double the results.

Thanks for your reply, I will have to run that test. And, no it did not take much to convince me, i fired my maintenance co.

I ran the diluted CYA test today and reading was 80 both times so if I’m reading you correctly, my CYA is 160! Correct, do I drain 1/2 of water and refill?

1/2 won't get you were you want to be. And in Houston, depending on where you are, you may not want to drain that much.

Do you live in an area with surface water nearby?

There is an exchange process. Takes some time and effort -- read Draining - Further Reading

Thanks for taking the time to help me get started! Ok, so in Houston it’s over 100° today, I don’t know exactly what the pool temp is but it’s way warmer than tap water! So from what I read on draining pool it is safer to use drain and replace. I will have to get a sump pump and drain from bottom, which in deep end is 4 1/2’ and fill to the top.
How do I know how long to run the pump, is my sump rate is 5 gal/min and pool is 14000 gal, I would have to run it 23 1/2 hrs to fill and replace 1/2 of pool volume, is that correct!

After draining pool my CYA is now 45, also added bleach and baking soda and all readings are within range! Thanks to all who commented and helped me!
Round up to 50CYA and make sure to follow the FC/CYA Levels based on that. Is the pool looking clear?
