Project Hoss's new pool - Updated 8/8

I have a lumber guy who is being very generous and giving me a great deal. If we go timber around 9.5-10k in material cost. If we go composite 13-15k in material cost.
Our house deck, not pool deck is large and composite. I appreciate, especially now that it's 20 years old, that I spent the extra on composite decking. No finishing in that time, only power washing (and now I just use Wet & Forget mostly) and it still looks great.

@bmoreswim your pic reminds me how slippery my composite deck was when it was wet. We had it in the front and when we built a rear deck with stairs down to the pool, I specifically went with wood so nobody faceplanted running up the stairs while wet.

I would not want it around the pool. Not with kids anyway. Once they are older it would matter alot less.

If any spray sunblock got on the composite deck, we slipped for days.

But I LOVED the no maintenance part with the front deck.

Yeah, I’m sure some are. Mine is old school Trex and not slippery when wet. 🎸

Update. Tomorrow 5/27 is the day. I have been getting as much prep done as possible, but the weather here in Ohio has been awful.

The ground is mostly level as there was already a pool on it. But, it's also super hard and packed down so that will be a struggle as we get the frame and pavers setup and level. The instructions say +/- 1" of level but I'm hoping to do better than that.

I also poured a 6" thick 34"x44" concrete pad for the pump mechanicals.

Hopefully by Monday I'll have some exciting pictures to share.

Good luck Hoss !!!! Remember. It can be some pretty strenuous stuff. Keeping us posted gets you a minute to catch your breath and more well wishes for the next stage, in real time.

You have no shortage of supporters, and their eyes may catch a detail that was overlooked. (y)

Well overall it's started ok. I have concerns that the ground is too mushy after all the rain we have had this week. Any thoughts on that? Not sure exactly what to do.
Short lunch break now.

I have not good thoughts.:( You need to be level, no exceptions. Gravity next week won't take pity on you the ground was wet today and let the pool stay up.

I worry with the ground being too soft and giving but I am a worry wort so..............do what you feel good about doing and go from there. Do you have Monday off? Can you wait to put it up late Sunday into Monday?

Yeah, we are digging the bricks in for the rest of the sides and will postpone the final assembly for a week or 2. Unfortunate but I'd rather wait and make it level.

Don't loose sight of the big picture. This pool is going to be up for 15-20 years. You won't even remember the 2 weeks...... 6 weeks from now. I promise.

Happy Tuesday morning all. Well the extreme sunlight really helped dry things out. At this moment, the Buttress are 1/2" from level and 1/8" from being perfectly square.
We have the 1 side of the oval level and pavers installed. On the opposite side we have 3 pavers to go. Hoping we can finish her up this weekend but we will see how it goes. Our neighbors were kind enough to invite us over yesterday to swim in their 16x20 inground pool, so we at least got some pool time in. Those inground pools in Ohio are COLD. I think it was 78°.

Anyway, some updated pictures. Still lots of work to do to get the ground flat around where the wall track lies, but I think most of the hard work is behind us.

Good morning pool lovers. BIG day yesterday, got the last really difficult part (I think) done. The pool wall us UP, the sand is inside the pool. Today is leveling and final assembly!

Uncoiling the wall was an enormous pain in the butt. It makes me very curious as how people do it. I'm a giant man, with hands the size of toasters, and all 4 of my buddies speculated how impossible this would be without my ability to man handle the giant 400lb coil of pool wall.

It's a PITA for everyone, but also many above ground pools require much less material . 21 ft rounds...... 18, 15, etc.

Just wait until you go to fill it. It's going to take a minute. :ROFLMAO:

WOWZER!!! Nice job!!!

Wanted to point out what Hoss did so he could leave the walls up overnight without too much worry (I am sure he still worried a bit). Note the "sticks" inside the pool that are stuck in the ground and taped to the walls. Also note the clamps on the top of the walls with sting on them. I am betting the stings were tied off to something outside the pool to help keep the walls up until this morning.

And Disaster. So we ran out of time and daylight this past weekend to get the liner in. So my wife and I took today off and got the liner installed ourselves. It's a J hook or V hook liner so it's a piece of cake compared to a overlap.

And now the bad news, and I'm looking for any suggestions from this group. The wind pulled the wall out of the track in 4 places on the curves. All of the sand of course seeped into the tracks so now I am at a loss for what to do next. We thought the day was going good. The liner is in, it looks mostly OK, but then we found the top plates wouldn't sit right. So scratching out heads wondering what we did wrong, I noticed the wall is out of the track.

So, sending a SOS for advice. The walls are all staked down now on the curves, and we have thunderstorms rolling in.
