Hi All,

Just opened my pool a few days ago and woke up to a loud whistling/humming sound.. any idea what could be going on? I know this has to be 15+ years old.. if it’s the motor; can anyone point me in the right direction for a new one? Is it easy to install yourself?

If you can post video with audio it would be easier to diagnose, but “loud whistling” would describe the sound I heard when my first motor had its bearings shot.

You can get a replacement at Inyo Pools, which I’ve found to have the best price and stellar customer service.

If @patrick3229 still hangs around here, he can maybe help with regards to Inyo Pools items.

It’s pretty easy to replace yourself if you have at least a fundamental understanding of DIY mechanical and electrical repair. Inyo has good video instructions, and there are a plethora of others on YouTube; you should be able to find something specific to your pump. Be sure when you replace the motor that you replace the shaft seal with a new one and do it properly. Otherwise you’ll be needing a new motor again by end of season.

Did you use the “attach files” button? You could once upon a time, perhaps not anymore.

You could try uploading it to WeTransfer and posting the link here.

Does the pump motor come with the shaft seal?

Not in my experience. It’s not particularly expensive. I don’t know if you’re on an SWCG or not, but be aware that in some cases there are shaft seals made specifically for saltwater pools. They’re the exact same specs and tolerances, they just use different materials (and are a little more expensive). If it’s available, I would go ahead and get a full seal and gasket service kit that includes a shaft seal. While you’ve got the motor off you might as well go ahead and replace all the gaskets and O-rings on the unit. Pick up a tube of PTFE MagicLube as well if you don’t have some already.
