Swim lane floor markings

I didn't tile a lane line because I didn't want to take away from the pool's appearance. Can I cut up waterproof vinyl floor mats to create the markings? Will something like this damage anything? What did y'all do? I'm on the 5th day of swimming laps in our new pool and I've crashed into the wall 3 times so far.
