Heater bypass?

Does not look like it. Back up about one or two steps at that angle and take another.

The pipe goes directly from the filter to the heater input. You don't have a heater bypass.

Pipe from filter needs to go to a 3way diverter valve that will send water to heater or to bypass.

Do you have a Jandy JXI heater? Does it have the Versaflo internal bypass?

thats not the same thing I have? It is Jandy JXI. are there different models?

You don't have this flat piece on the header that I outlined in red which is the Versaflo automatic bypass valve...

thanks! do you know if that's something that can be added on or is the unit what it is and if I wanted to bypass I have to wait until I replace the whole heater

I believe the Versaflo can be added but it will then require adjustments to the pipes running into the heater. So not a small job.

And that bypass still allows a small amount of water flow through the heater. So it will not accomplish the same as a manual diverter valve to shut off all water to the heater if it is leaking or the pool water chemistry may damage the heat exchanger.
